Name: James Lee
I just did a clean reinstall and loaded a new WIN XP Home operating system. I saved all my important files (photos, software applications, etc.) on CD's and everything went perfectly until now. I have several photo editing programs but the one I use the most is Microsoft Photo Editor 3.01. Now when I load it and click on the PHOTOED icon I get the message "No file format information can be found in the Registry." So now Photo Ed opens up and you can scan and edit but not save to a folder. And if you try to browse and open up a photo in my documents or anywhere else I get "Photo Editor cannot find or open etc." I've read a little on the internet that this is a confirmed problem with Microsoft Photo Editor and that you have to make some changes in the registry. You have to change the security permission to "users." I have my system restore working perfectly so I'm willing to give it a shot and restore if something goes wrong. But what I'm wondering is why it worked before I did the clean install. Only things that are differect is I had to buy a new WIN XP Home (long story) and use it instead of the WIN XP Home that came loaded on the computer. And I also reloaded the Norton 2003 Antivirus and that works but it's different than the one that came with the computer. Or the settings are different. The one that came loaded on the computer was also Norton 2003, but this time I have Norton Internet Security on it. Could anyone give me some advice or steer me to some help via the internet?
Jimi. I always post back.

Are you sure that Photo Editor Vers 3.01 is actually compatible with XP? - check here...

Lesley,
I've been using it with XP for about 5 months so I guess it's compatible. I think that I may have some kind of administrative settings enabled that are different than before I did the clean install. Maybe that affects it. I don't know. I didn't have a name in "computer administrator" before. When I loaded windows this time and it asked me for my name I typed it in, no password though. This is frustrating. I may have to start using Adobe Elements 2, or ACDsee 5, or Microsoft Picture it 5, or Adobe Photoshop 7.0. I have all those and they all loaded perfectly. They are very complex to me though. I have hundreds of pictures to scan, edit, and save, and MS Photo Editor is simple and fast and I'm used to it.

You don't have to cling to Office 97.
Try using Windows Application Compatibility mode, a specific feature in Windows XP. This mode provides an environment for running programs that closely reflects the behavior of earlier Windows operating systems. To run programs in Windows Application Compatibility mode in Windows XP, follow these steps:
1. Right click on the program PHOTOED.exe in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd
2. Click on Properties.
3. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select an appropriate operating system: say, Windows 2000.Now it should work fine. Refer to the following article: Q292533 (HOW TO: Use Windows Program Compatibility Mode in Windows XP) from http://support.microsoft.com
