no EAX at all and no 5.1 w/optical

I give up... I go into soldier of fortune 2 and click on EAX in the sound options and I get no sound... I have a Hurculese Fortissimo III 7.1 sound card but that doesnt matter because I have already determined that it probably isnt the soundcard. I get optical sound... but I dont get 5.1 through it. I dont get EAX with optical or analog... I just want EAX in games using my optical and DTS receiver...
