I have Windows XP, but I don’t have an advanced tab in device manager to enable DMA in any of my IDE/ATAPI controllers. How do I get this option?

Ok, i'm an idiot. I read the article but it only says how to enable it. It doesn't say what to do if you don't even have a DMA option.

thanks for the help

trasky, Are you following the instructions below?

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1.
Open Device Manager.

2.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3.
Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4.
In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

• Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.

• Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

Tufenuf,
I guess i'm not explaining myself very well. When I go into the device manager I select the IDE ATA/ATAPI. Then I select properties under the primary IDE channel. When the properties screen comes up there are only 4 tabs, and they are General, Driver, Details and resources. I don't have an advanced tab. I have looked everywhere in the properties screen but nothing that talks about DMA.

I think you are not double clicking on ATA/ATAPI controllers--Then clicking on primary ide channel---Then clicking on secondary ide channel Because at the top they show advanced settings.

Most likely he has the Intel Application Accelerator installed. It sets all devices to their maximum mode. In this case the advanced tab is not available.
