Comment:

I have a new machine (ASUS P4PE, 1,7 Celeron, 512 MB RAM with PCI ISDN card) with Windows XP on it!

This is the first time I tried Windows XP (used Windows 98 previously) and I can't connect to the Internet; I get error 680: no dial tone message!

All I had to do in Windows 98 was uncheck the 'Wait for dial tone' box somewhere in properties of a dial-up connection, but I JUST CAN'T FIND THAT IN WINDOWS XP, I digged everywhere, it drives me crazy, what should I do? Regards and thanks!

Did you set up a network connection under Network Connections in Control Panel? All the questions they ask in the process should solve your problem (assuming you have an ISP, have the phone line plugged in, and your modem's working)(and assuming you want to do a dial-up connection, not DSL, cable, etc.). Then you can set up shortcuts tothat connection wherever you want them. If I haven't answered your question, let me know.

Yes I set up a dial-up connection using the wizard (the proccess ask you to define type of connection: dial-up, ISP data: mannualy, prompts for a password, login and telephone number) and after I hit dial I get that message!

The only other thing I can add is that my ISP helped me when I had this problem. If I remember correctly he told me to disable the McAfee firewall as well as the Internet firewall, neither of which I felt I needed anyway, as long as my virus scan was working.

Sorry I can't help beyond this.

Have you checked in Device Manager to make sure the modem is correctly installed? (No exclamation points, etc)
