No desktop icons!

hello, my name is cristina please somebody help me. I have a TOSHIBA laptop, WINDOWS XP PRO. When I turned it on today no icons appeared on the desktop! no taskbar or startbuttons appear. I can't even right clic. The only thing that works is CTRL+ALT+DEL. i don't know what to do. it would be great if somebody could help me

Hi,
Can you get into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during the boot process.
If so
1) Try just shutting down and then rebooting.
If this gets you no where go back to Safe Mode
2) Then try a System Restore

Hi Cristina,
You might want to try pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL and then clicking on the Applications tab, next click on New Task on the bottom right-hand corner of that window and type in explorer in that box before hitting the OK button.
In theory the desktop icons and taskbars should appear, anyway let us know if that helped.

I have 'no icons' above. But I cannot callup my TaskManager to attempt steps suggested by ER4S3R.
I read back to old posts about blank desktops and having the sysu.exe and ddm folder. I went through all the suggested steps [regedit].I did not have any of these when I looked through Safe Mode. No sysu.exe was in the system or ddm folder.
