No desktop after boot

I have a HP Omnibook, running Windows XP Home Edition. The computer starts up OK but when it comes to shifting to the windows desktop the screen just goes black, no desktop. The hardrive keeps loading and seems to load OK. Everything works fine in failsafe mode, I've tried running a minimal boot in MSconfig but to no avail. What can be causing this behavior? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks! /Marcus

Boot to safe mode and set your display setting to the lowest settings listed. It sounds like you need a display driver, but if it works in safe mode, this may get you going.

look for multiple display adapter entries in safe mode and try disabling one at a time and testing rebooting.
also enable vga mode and see if you can see desktop.

Hello again. Thanks everybody for the replys. I have found the solution to the problem. The person using the Omnibook had been on a convention where he had been demonstrated a second scrren connected to the computer. After that the problems showed up. The solution was to connect an external monitor and check a display option to revert back to the notebook's monitor. That's all there was to it! Glad I didn't start that format c:\ session!
