No D Drive/E Drive

When I have recently started my PC, the D and E Drives have both gone missing from My Computer. In the case of the D Drive, I am unable to open the cassette area to place a CD in the drive.

Assuming, d and e are cd or dvd drives, are they in the device manager?

Yes, i do mean CD and DVD drives but i can find neither in device manager.

Check the wide ribbon wire on them. But first check to see if the bios sees them.

Sorry about this but same as response 4, could you please take me step-wise through how to check the bios or the wide ribbon wire because you have kind of lost me now. Thanks for all the time you are giving to help me though, it is very much appreciated.
