Comment:

Was running ME. Installed XP. Set to HPFS No problems. Worked beautifully.
Shut down computer. Could not reboot.

I have four hard drives C:, D:, E:, F: A CD-ROM and a CD-RW.

500 MHz, 512 RAM

Booting computer gives screen with
1) help
2) start with CD-ROM support
3) start without CD-ROM support
4) minimal boot

Using either ME or XP start up floppy disk the help brings up ME help text file.

Nothing in the help file have helped.

At the A: prompt:

I have run scandisk and scanreg /restore.

nothing.

A:\ C:
C:\dir
Invalid media type reading drive C:

So c: is not active.

D:\dir
Invalid media type reading drive D:

F:\dir Volume in drive F is MS-RAMDRIVE

Has a list of files starting with attrib.exe and unding with sys.com (14 files)

G:\dir
CR101: Not reading drive G:

H:\dir
brings up whatever is on the CD ROM

If it is the ME CD-ROM it includes setup.

can run ME setup.

If it is the XP CD-ROM, can run setup, but says that XP can not be installed from DOS

Back to ME CD-ROM

H:\setup
runs scandisk
Scandisk checked the following drives and found no errors. Drives E & F

Setup begins the dialog box
System Error Cannot read from drive C

Hit cancel

Starts ME setup

Setup Detection Message SU0013

if I could get by SU0013 I don't know if othe error messages would follow.

I am completely in the dark about this, but it seems that the first thing is to get the C: drive to be recognized.

Anyone have any suggestions.

thanks,

George

It sounds like to me that you lost your partitioning information on the hard drive. Run Fdisk, and create a new primary partition. format the drive, and try setup again. (The windows XP cd is bootable, so you can just start up from that and setup directly.)

Thanks, that helped. I'm almost there.

C: is clean and partitioned

You said that the Windows XP CD is bootable.

I have the upgrade version.

I put the CD in and booted.

Couldn't find on floppy
Couldn't find on CD-ROM
Couldn't find on SCSI

Tried to run XP setup from CD-ROM at Dos Prompt.

"This program can not be run in DOS"

Booting with either the ME startup floppy or the XP startup floppy, I get to:

Help
Start with CD ROM support
Start without CD-ROM support
Minimal Boot

Tried installing ME again. This is an upgrade. Just to get something started. Of course it can't find anything for Windows 98.

Put in the Win 98 SE CD, but it can't find anything there.

You have got me part of the way. Hoping you can get me the rest of the way.

Thanks,

George

Just an update,

Finally got ME installed and working.

had a bunch of yellow question marks in system/devices.

Kept trying every disc and CD I had until I found the right drivers.

This might be of interest to someone. Sometimes I would have to search for drivers on the same floppy or CD several times before it would pick it up.

Got those cleared up.

Everything is running well. One minor detail is MS-DOS compatability.

Thanks much, I was about ready to call Dell and order a new computer.
