Solved No broadband connection after clean install of win xp

I am using my friends laptop right now and I am unable to connect to the internet. The computer used to work to connect to the internet, but he did a clean install of win xp. When I click internet explorer a box pops up that says dial up connection and asks for a user name and password. I used the network connection wizard and did -connect to internet-- set up connection manually-- connection that is always on. XP says the connection should be working. I am trying to connect directly with a wired connection for right now, and I have the ethernet drivers installed. Under network connections, everything under broadband says disconnected, under internet gateway, it says connected, under lan or high speed internet it shows both 1394 and local area network as connected. If I double click internet gateway it shows 700,000 packets sent and 1000 recieved. MY isp tells me there is no handshake between computer and modem.

"he did a clean install of win xp"

We're unaware of his (or your) expertise so I've gotta ask - were ALL the device drivers installed (chipset, graphics, audio, network, etc)? Did you check Device Manager to make sure there are no problems?

Go to Internet Options > Connections tab & check "never dial a connection".
