I have just completed a clean reinstall of XP,and I have no sound./ Control panel tells me there is no audio device, and device manager has a yellow question mark against Multi media audio controller, going into properties it says 'the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). Attempts to install the drivers, both from the XP disc and the internet were not successful. Could I have a faulty disk?.

Devices are not installed code 28.
Have you right clicked on the yellow question mark and updated drivers?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have asked to 'Install software automatically' and tried with the XP disk. In both cases the necessary software cannot be found

Have identified as Intel 82801 EBCH5 AC97 Audio controller (a-2/A-3) (which means absolutely nothing to me!) Cannot find anything like this on Geeks.
Nikolaus what do you mean by the Motherboard disk?
Sorry to be a pain Folks!

Have you tried going to device manager...
Right-click on My Computer choose 'Properties' click on the 'Hardware' tab click on the 'Device Manager' button click the "+" next to 'Sound, video and game controllers' to show audio devices Delete any audio devices listed in the resulting list. Reboot and see if Windows can find the audio devices you just deleted.

Sorry for the delay, slow computer and ISP (AOL) problems. Have tried your suggestion Sreetl, The system finds new hardware after unistalling, but drivers cannot be found on the internet or on the XP and Advent recovery disk.
