I hope someone can help here...
I have a Tiny 5-3500 pci express system which decided to die on me the other week. I managed to reinstall windows and get everything back to near enough normal, except i have no audio!
I checked the BIOS, but that has the audio set to auto, and everything is plugged in just as it should be inside. My audio used to work, so i suspect it's something to do with the reinstall, but i can't figure out what.

The audio controller is an intel 82801FB ICH6 High Definition Audio Controller [B-1] if that helps anyone.

I'm running xp pro with 1GB memory and 3GHz P4

I have double checked the drivers cd which came with the pc, and the only fles in the folder are .pdf files which aren't much use. I can't "roll back" the drivers as I had a major crash and had to do a full reinstall of xp, so there is nothing to rollback to.

so, i used the cpuid program, (www.cpuid.com) and discovered that my motherboard is :

Manufacturer : First International Computer Inc.
Model: P4M-915G/PD1 PCB 2.X
Chipset: Intel i915P/i915G Rev B1
Southbridge: Intel 82801FB (ICH6)
Sensor: IT 8712

So, i went to the fic website, and found this page:
http://www.fic.com.tw/download/MB/775/P4M-915GD1.aspx

Downloaded all the files (except INTEL.zip which was not found)
Ran ICH6.zip first, like it says, then the rest, but STILL no sound!

Am I being really thick here, or am I doing something wrong?

Also, In device manager, I have 3 yellow ! signs at:

Multimedia Controller
Multimedia Video Controller
Network Controller

This is driving me crazy!

If your audio controller is integrated onto the motherboard (as yours is) then the appropriate drivers should be included in the CD that came with your motherboard purchase/computer purchase. The following link is Intel's download resources for your motherboard model:

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-011594.htm

See if you can find the correct driver download there. Almost always, if the audio is integrated, then the Windows Generic drivers (included on the Windows CD AND copied to your computer when you install WinXP) should work fine. Try using Device Manager to Update your drivers, and select the appropriate Windows Generic drivers for the audio/video/multimedia controllers with "!" next to them.

Lastly, in your BIOS, for the Audio option, select "AC'97" instead of "Auto" if it's an available option.

The "!" next to Network Controller in Device Manager indicates that you have more problems than just audio issues. Are all your network connections (LAN, Wireless, etc.) working fine?

All good advise above. I would suggest you remove the entries in device manager with the exclamation marks and then enter the BIOS and see if you have any other options. If Windows still doesn't want to properly install the sound chip get the drivers from the Intel or FIC site and if you can't update the drivers on the non working sound chip, rermove again, reboot and hit escape when windows tries to install the sound. After Windows has loaded go to install new hardware in control panel and try configuring it from there with the downloaded drivers.
