I'm having the same problem...No active mixer devices after installing XP Home and the SP2(?) upgrade add on or whatever it was. I seen above where someone suggested entering BIOS to enable onboard sound. How do I get there to do this or are there any other suggestions?

Most Dell BIOS are entered by hitting either the Del key or the F2 key during boot-up. Then search through the BIOS for the intergrated / onboard settings.

Thanks LL for your response. I went into the BIOS...Integrated Devices. It shows USB Emulation off and Video DAC Snoop off, all other is either on or auto. Anything else I can do?

Go to the Dell Support site and download the necessary drivers for your computer.
If you list the exact model, I may be able to help you find what you need.

Do you mean....Optiplex G100?
I did check the web site but I don't know what to look for..I feel I may have deleted the driver(s) by mistake.....I really don't know. Just that the sound is gone and last night when I ran DirectX Diagnostic Tool the message I go was "No sound Card was found" What a mess!!
Thank very much,

There isn't a "G100" listed on the Dell site. Do you mean GX100?
I don't think the GX100 has intergrated audio!?
Are there audio connections on the back of the computer?Did you have the computer up and running previous with sound working and what version of Windows? (98 - NT - ME - XP)

Ooops.....Sorry, yes I did mean GX100. I'm not sure what you mean by audio connections on the back of the computer. I know the speakers are plugged in back there.
I've had this computer for about 3yrs with sound. I Upgraded from 98SE to XP almost a year ago but when I added SP2 my sound was gone.

Check the Control Panel - Sounds + Audio Devices - Audio tab. Play with the different different choices in the drop down window listed under "Default Device".
Still no joy, try ---->
OK, I'm assuming the sound card is a pci or isa card that was factory installed. Oddly enough, Dell doesn't list any drivers for Windows XP on the 2 cards that Dell used on the GX100. Dell does however offer drivers for Win 2000; these drivers may work for XP. What I would do is pull the sound card from the case to check if it is a Voytra Turtle Beach or a SoundBlaster card. Then try using the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard in the Control Panel on your pc to add the drivers for the card (my thinking is the drivers are on the Win XP CD). If this doesn't work, try the Win 2000 drivers that are on the Dell site.
*Go Here* for said drivers.sLLs

Just to add; did you check the Device Manager for the sound card? If there, select it - remove it - reboot. This may force Windows to re-recognize the card.
You could also try opening the case, removing the sound card and place it in another slot if one is available, though I don't believe there are any more than 1 or 2 on an Optiplex. But even simply pulling it and re-inserting may do the trick.
Final solution: you can purchase a new sound card for as little as $8 to $10 via PriceWatch

Thanks LL for your help.....I'll try some of your suggestions but not sure I want to mess inside the puter........I'll let you know what happens

Pulling an re-inserting cards in the 'puter case is as easy as changing batteries in a flashlight.
Let us know how you make out.
