OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: Athlon 700/128Mb
Comment:

I started receiving an error msg at startup that is the following,"Primary IDE Channel no 80 conductor cable installed". With the original hdd, I am unable to boot into windows. The computer stops at "verifying dmi pool data". I tried another hdd. I still receive the "Primary IDE Channel no 80 conductor cable installed", but I can boot to the OS. Why does it give the basically a bad IDE cable/connection error both times, but boots to the OS with one hdd and not the other?
Thanks in advance!

That error message just says that you do not have the hard drive connected with an 80 wire cable. The drive will still work but not at its maximum speed. Buy an 80 wire cable.

You probably have one good drive and the other drive has a problem of some kind.

ok, this is your problem...
you have UDMA enable but you are using a 40-conductor ide cable
at least your bios is kind enough to tell you your problem

your system will boot up if you disable UDMA in the integrated peripherals section of your CMOS setup program

however it is most desirable to take advantage of the features of UDMA by getting that 80-conductor ATA ide cable

Why has this error msg never been there before now? I have used this ide cable forever. syntronyx: you were correct. the error msg is no more. however, the hdd i had been using that would not boot, will still not boot. it is detected fine in cmos with the correct characteristics. is my hdd dead?
