Comment:

Every night I turn my computer off, and then the next day when I turn it on again, I get the error message NLTDR is missing while the computer is loading. Then it locks up and I have to press control alt delete, which just restarts it again. Sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesn't. What do I do?

Thanks,
Ryan

One thing you may have missed MDK. "Sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesn't." That part of the NLTDR message isn't normal, at least I don't think it is.

Three possible causes.
1. Drive going bad.
2. Weak power supply.
3. Bad install of Xp.

Try using drive checking utitlities to see if the drive is in good health. For starters try running chkdsk from the command prompt.

If your psu is too weak it might need to spin up a couple of times before it's actually up to speed.

"NTLDR Is Missing" Error Message When You Upgrade or Install Windows XP Over Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition

Also to say, you should get more RAM.
XP uses all of, at least, 128 to run properly,
and works better.
It slows things down if you have programs
starting and running in the background during Startup.
Also when you open programs, things are slower
if they have to take RAM away from XP.
You should have enough RAM (above 128) for each program you run at the same time.
