NIC causing a lock-up?

This is a weird problem, I'll do my best to describe it..... My son's PC (bought 6 months ago thru TigerDirect) locks up if the ethernet cable is plugged in prior to booting up. If he waits for the boot process to complete and THEN plugs in the cable, he's ok. We have cable modem and a LinkSys router. The NIC is built into the mobo....a VIA P4MA Pro. It also CAME with a PCTEL NIC card already installed. I don't get that.....but, apparently even THAT NIC didn't work. Ire-installed WinXP a month ago (which I had to go buy....there were NO restore CD's with the PC) and everything worked fine until about a week ago. I suggested we do a WinXP REPAIR but he's scared he'll lose everything. I don't think he will....or, at least, he shouldn't. Any ideas? TIA

He should not loose everything. As I understand it you have two NIC Cards? If so, and you are using the OnBoard NIC remove the one installed in the PCI slot, there is probably a conflict.
Also make sure ONBoard Nic is set to enabled in the BIOS.
A quick check would be disable the other PCI NIC in the device manager if it does not lock up, then that would be the problem.
