Hi I am trying to get my sister's internet to connect she has an XP mine is 98 so I don't know much about the XP, it is a new computer HP- Pentium 4 she got it a month ago and has been on the internet but all of a sudden the internet wouldn't come on the people at the ISP she gets her cable modem from said they couldn't help her that it shows that she has internet activity. I hooked it up to my internet cable same ISP as her high speed and I see the connection is on but I can not get her internet on I disabled the firewall thinking it might be that it wasn't I also tried pinging it and it sent 4 packets and lost none. I thought maybe her Ethernet card may be loose so I opened it up to check it out and it doesn't have a card it has an adapter built on the motherboard which can't be removed. I went to the HP site to see if I can find out anything I couldn't find anything to compare it too, is there anything else I can try to see why it won't go online I would appreciate any help, thank you. suzieQ

Did you go into Control Panel, System Icon and Hardware Tab, Click on Device Manager.
Go down the list of devices...until you get to NETWORK ADAPTERS. Click on this and click on the network adapter specific to the mobo..is it showing a yellow exclamation? I am thinking, it might be that the ethernet adapter driver has malfunctioned or been corrupted.Secondly, did you try a system restore?
Did she set a restore point? Did HP give her a restore disk?Also, I would try out the Network Icon
in the Control Panel and see if the Local Area Connection is functioning.

I'll just post the steps I would take to verify I have a working Internet Connection.
1)
You pinged succesfully, so I assume that the Ethernet connector is enabled in the BIOS. So, no need to check that.2)
Checking whether the Ethernet/Network Adapter card has its drivers installed:
ControlPanel>System>Hardware page
>Device Manager
Look in the list of installed devices under "Network Adapters".
The Ethernet card/port should be listed there. Rightclick it for its properties. Make sure the device is enabled.Also, if her modem requires drivers to be installed, then check that they have been in DeviceManager, and that the modem is enabled.
3)
Checking whether the TCP/IP protocol is installed:
START>All Programs>Accessories>Communications
>Network Connections
Rightclick your "Ethernet Local Area (LAN)" connection for its properties. In the list on the "General" page, the entry for "Internet TCP/IP" protocol should be listed and checkmarked.4)
Checking the setup of the LAN connection:
Select that "Internet TCP/IP" entry in the list, and press the "properties" button. On the next panel, set it to
"Obtain an IP address automatically" <YES
"Obtain DNS server address automatically" <YES
On the "Alternate Configuration" page, set
"Automatic private IP address" <YES
These steps should give you a functioning internet connection... I'll wait for your verdict on that :)

Hi I did everything that was mentioned above and all was correct. I was talking to a tech from the ISP provider we are with he said that there was 2 registry keys courrupted and she doesn't think she got a restore CD with the computer is there anyway to repair the keys thanks for the help and still open to suggestions. suzieQ

The ISP tech is probably referring to the "Windows Sockets". You can use this little program to set the "WinSocks" back to their default setting:

Thank you all for your help I did a system recovery and I was connected again of course lost all the programs that were downloaded before at least I can do them all over again and I told her to leave the retore option on for next time. Again thanks for the help.suzieQ
