OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU/Ram: AMD 2200+/512 MB DDR SDRA
Comment:

I recently built my own computer. I have an ECS Elitegroup K7 motherboard, AMD 2200+ Athlon XP processor, etc. I formatted C: to NTSF and installed Windows XP Pro. Once it was done installing, it rebooted and attempted to start Windows XP Pro for the first time. The 'Windows XP loading' page looked fine, but then it hung on the next screen, which was a green screen with my cursor in the middle and about 2/5 of the top blacked out. I can only run my machine in safe mode.

For a while, it was giving me the option to select which OS to use:

Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Microsoft Windows

After about 4 new installations (completly new, reformatting of C:) I no longer get to chose bewteen the above 2. But I still get the same hanging during the loading of Win XP Pro.

I don't want to have to use safe mode anymore. :( Please help.

Did you overclocking your system before installing XP ?
Some of M'board, especially was designed for AMD processor sometimes can't received or denied by XP. Please, make it to normal.

You may have a faulty video card or need the updated drivers for it. Rgds.

Actually, XP can use MSVideo driver by default. I think no problem with video card.

There would be a problem if the card is bad!

But if my card is bad, why can I use SafeMode?

I updated my driver for my video card (ATI Radeon 7000 PCI 64MB) with the one that came on the CD with the card. But now, instead of getting the frozen green screen with the cursor and the black top (which is occassionally a zebra screen with the top blacked), I get a pure black screen, then my monitor shuts off.

Try start in safe mode, go to control panel, system, device manager, hardware, video drivers and delete whatever you have there, reboot and see if XP will install the correct drivers.

I tried unistalling the drivers for the video card under safe mode and behold! I get to run Windows XP for the first time on my new computer! Thanks, gabep! I'll post any further problems if they come up.

Also, if the MOBO has an onboard video card go into the bios and disable it.

My suggestion is : DON'T DELETE ANYTHING IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT!
Please make default your system installation hardware from BIOS. Save the chages and tell me the problem.

I have no onboard video card.

New problem: If I delete the drivers for my video card, I can get it to restart once in normal mode. But then if I try to restart again from normal mode, it doesn't work. :( I have to go back to safe mode to delete the video card drivers or use the last known good config option.

New situation. Anyone have any new solutions?

Go back to the device manager and see if there are 2 drivers installed and if you have a yellow excamation mark on any of them.

Are these the updated drivers from Radeon for XP? if so, one more try. Go to device manager, video drivers, select the radeon card, double click and try to update the drivers. I am using an almost identical system as yours,[my backup] and it runs fine.

I would first try a new video card. If problems still persist I would replace the power supply. If they then still persist I would replace the motherboard. I had a system a few weeks ago that would turn itself on. Replaced PSU and still happened. Removed modem and still happened. Finally the motheboard just died.

Replaced motherboard and I have not heard from the client sense then. Just because the system will start in safe mode does not mean there is not a hardware failure. With memory, it can fail when it reaches a certain temp or if it is flakey just cause all kinds of weird problems. I've seen it first hand but those are the steps you need to start taking. Until you do, who knows at this time what is causing the problem.

I lean towards bad VRAM myself.

I downloaded the latest drivers and software for my ATI Radeon 7000. I burned them onto a CD-RW and installed them to my new system. It seems to be working fine now.

The first time it restarted, it froze about 20 seconds after loading the desktop. I had to restart. It froze about 20-30 after the desktop was loaded. Now it's letting the desktop load normally and it's not freezing... so far, so good.

I want to update Windows, but I can't get my LAN to run from my new system. :( Any ideas with that?

Do a new post with the problems with more detail. Some one here will help you. Glad to see you didn't have to replace anything. I invited KTTD to help, he is the moderator. Rgds.

Just wanted to say that after a full day, still no problems with the system. :)

Thanks a ton, everyone. I'm making this forum my first place to turn with tough computer problems.
