Hi -
I installed a new Nvidia TNT2 (32 mb) vid card on this machine. All ran fine. I got to my desktop and XP popped up saying it could improve my visualtion or settings if I clicked on the little balloon. So I did.
The screen then went black.
Now when I reboot all looks like it is going to come up, the XP screen etc but when my desktop comes up it is a black screen again.

Boot into XP in VGA mode. Try to download the latest Detonator driver for XP/2000 from www.nvidia.com and install. Also right click the desktop and click properties, click the settings tab and the advanced button near the bottom. Click the Monitors tab and set it to the lowest frequency (normally 60Hz). Hope that helps!

I put the old card back in, a Vanta and things worked fine.
So I tried getting new drivers and then putting the new card back in. Same problem again.
In safe mode I have no options to change on the monitor in advanced - all greyed out.
I got things back running with new card but it comes up in 640 X 480 and 8 bit. If I try and change anything it black screens again.

Hi there: is it your problem when you boot up your computer into windows with black screen before the loging screen?. If so, the video card driver is not working Properly, you could boot your computer to VGA mode or Safe mode to unlnstall the video driver and download the latest version, reinstall again. And It will work fine, because I have the same problem, too and I did tha same thing, it works fine for me. Try it, :-)
