Using XP Home Edition SP2. I've changed the time zone by going to Date and Time Properties > Time Zone.

However, the new setting isn't retained for long; sometimes after the first reboot, sometimes after the second or third or ... reboot, the system reverts to the original time zone setting.

Is there something else I need do, or, if this is a known problem, a workaround ?

It can help try changing the battery located on the motherboard.

Thank you for the replies.

tomtt: The battery is about five years old, so I suppose it could be causing problems, but wouldn't battery problems be evident elsewhere also?

fantomas: If I don't arrive at another solution I'll try changing the battery.

Battery only 5years old, usually they last longer but still could be battery. If no other cause is mentioned, I would change it they are only 3 to 5 bucks and very easy to change.
As for your question, in the early stages of battery failure, I think it could possibly start out as your problem and nothing else, but later progress into system beeps and failures.

I've been informed that when "Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server" is enabled at Date and Time Properties > Internet Time, a new time zone setting will sometimes revert to the original setting when synchronization is attempted. Disabling "Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server" or stopping the "Windows Time" service at services.msc will prevent this happening.

I've disabled "Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server" and thus far the new time zone setting has been retained.

If this solution doesn't work in the longer term, I'll try changing the battery.

My date and time continue to change each time that I turn on my computer. I try to change it manually to the correct time but it just reverts back to an incorrect time immediately after I press "apply". My laptop is just a year old.

Windows security center constantly tells me that my antivirus is out of date but I already have the most up to date anitvirus (symantec antivirus liveupdate).

Ad-aware and SpyBot don't pick up anything. Neither does microsoft's malware removal kit. Any suggestions?
