ok, well...
I just finished putting together a new computer. pretty spiffy specs if you ask me. the mobo is a gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 and the hard drive i have is a Seagate Barracuda 7200 160GB. I cant seem to get the hard drive to work. When i put in a bootable windows cd it starts to work then says it cannot detect the hard drive. any help would be really great - i really want to get this thing up and running. feel free to email me at complexmethod @ hot mail . comthanks,
Mattgod help us...

Are you sure that you have a SATA drive?
seagate lists a baracuda 160 as both a SATA and as a IDE 7200 rpm model.....
Barracuda 7200.7 SATA, Model Number:ST3160023AS Capacity:160 GB Speed:7200
rpm Seek time:8.5 ms avg Interface:Serial ATA, .......and......
Barracuda 7200.7, Model Number:ST3160021A Capacity:160 GB Speed:7200
rpm Seek time:8.5 ms avg Interface:Ultra ATA/100
If you are sure that what you have is the SATA drive then ....Did you pre install the drivers for it when set-up first started? Because if you didn't then set up can't find the HD because it is looking in the wrong place.
The XP install disc will prompt you to instal the drivers before setup begins by pressing F8 key or something like that(forgot which)Self-reverence

I think it's F6. You need to have your motherboard chipset driver disk which will have the SATA drivers that you need installed before the XP instal can continue.

Is the hard drive being detected in the BIOS?
Have you enabled the IDE device in BIOS? (Normally it should be set to auto detect). Also as it is a SATA drive you may need to press F6 at start of install to install your third party raid drivers (even if you are not using raid).
I also hope you are using WinXP SP1 with 48bit LBA enabled because at 160 GB you have busted the old ATA protocol maximum hard drive size limit of 137 GB. To learn more about this aspect visit my website (Homepage link) and look up the section titled "Working with Large sized Hard Drives, especially 127 GB or bigger".

One more thing, as you have a SATA drive, you may also need to enable SCSI as you boot option in BIOS. Have you done that?

holy crap... talk about help! haha... didnt expect to see any posts till tomorrow (well, today i guess since its 2am here)
Its SATA - im sure
anyway - thanks for everything! I totally forgot about the 3rd party thing in xp setup...oops :/
and yes - its xp SP1
as for the SCSI option - would i set that as boot option 1? or should hard disk 0 be set?
thanks soo much - im off to see if i can get it working

ok - not sure why.... but when i go to press F6 it doesnt work - it just continues on and says press F2 for bla bla bla.... then continues to load the default stuff...
any ideas?

"Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver ..."
When you receive this message, press the F6 key, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install the third-party drivers for your controller card.
You will need to press the S key to Specify an Additional Device(s).

it doesnt give me any instructions.... it just continues on as if i didnt press F6
if you want you can IM me on AIM @ complexmethod1
thanks
Matt

After you press F6, it does SEEM that Windows has ignored this keypress, but it has taken note of it. It does go on to write installation files to disk and to ask for your input in the installation procedure. At some point,
however, it will ask you to press S to install additional drivers (which you have called for by pressing F6 earlier). You then will be prompted to place a floppy in the A: drive and to press the appropriate key to copy the files from the floppy. You will be asked to do this each time you indicate that you have additional drivers to install (by pressing S).

ok - i got it to where it has you press S and then asks to
"Please insert the disk labled Manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk into Drive A: * Press ENTER when ready."
well, all i have is the CD-ROM from NVIDIA and it wont except it... (I'm assuming Drive A: is the floopy drive... but i dont have a floppy disk)
thanks,
Matt

You will need to extract the drivers from the CD to a floppy drive. Alternatively if you know the driver, you can get it from the manufacturers website and put it onto a floppy.
I do NOT believe you can use the CD to load the drivers. You do need the floppy. I could be wrong though.

i dont think it can read from my floopy :/
the light is on...but it doesnt sound like it accesses the disk...ill check the connecters but im sure they're on there tight...maybe i have to set something up in the bios?

If the floppy light is on permanently it is possible you have the cable reversed.

ok, i think i got it... it found the floppy anyway... and said it was loading it for xp - so hopefully we're getting there...however little the steps maybe lol
thanks a BILLION for all your help guys
"Setup is starting Windows"
lets hope it gets there...

ok.... now im getting an error
"STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll"now what? lol

I do not know anything about that. It could be that you have loaded an incorrect driver.
However, if you do a google search I am sure you will find some thing.
By the way is your BIOS upto date? It could be the problem - you never know. Check it out.
Anyway here are a few related URLs to look at:

ok, im not figureing this out...its really starting to bug me now its been saying "starting windows" for like, 15 minutes now...
gerrrrrr....

Which driver did you load during the F6 / S phase?
According to the Gigabyte site there are two versions of SATA drivers. These being:
1. Silicon Image SiI 3x12 SATALink Controller Driver
2. Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATARaid Controller OS DriverThen there is also the "ITE IDE Gigaraid driver"
You need to ensure that you are using the right drivers based on how you are using the motherboard SATA and IDE ports.

i installed the
Silicon Image SiI 3x12 SATALink Controller Driver for Windows XP / 2000
I dont know what I did, but apparently posting "gerrrrrr" on this forum / board did the trick...that and restarting a couple of times and doing the same thing. I did switch install CD's to XP Home - but that was a while back...
anyway - so far so good...its at 11% formatting the drive then installing (hopefully *knocks on wood*) so I'll post the results
Thanks a ton guys (and gals?)
Matt

ok, so heres the deal - it doesnt install, sure i can get the thing to format...but then nothing...
anyway - i ended up taking it to the local comp shop and the guy said that that with an AMD setup like mine SATA drives usually dont work on their own....but the documentation says otherwise...so... either theres some option in the bios that i missed or i need another hard drive to setup a RAID...gerrrr

Hey,
I'm just now looking into booting from SATA so I won't be able to help you much, but I did notice on your last post here that you said your local comp guy said SATA drives wouldn't work by themselves with AMD. Not so. At least, maybe you have to have a RAID to have them bootable, but you don't have to have a RAID to have an AMD machine running XP to recognize them. I've got two SATA drives running, not in RAID and I got them several months apart. AMDs run SATAs just fine by themselves. I've got an AMD XP2600+ o/c'd to 2800+ and the famed ASUS nVidia Platinum board. Please be sure to post your final solution!

not sure what / how he did it...but he went through all the connections, and figured it out.... basically he did everything ive been trying but must have done something with the way it was connected. i was sooo happy cause i didnt feel like dumping more $$ into this system...shoot, im a poor college kid :P
thanks for the help everyone
Matt

Glad you are sorted. Enjoy your new PC. I am envious, I only have a p3-1Gig on a Abit SA6R.
Best Wishes
