Subject: New MotherBoard kills XP boot ?!?
|
Comment: Hi.. I recently experienced some trouble of when I bought a new motherboard/cpu (Abit KR7A w/ XP1800+ VIA266A) and dropped it in, thinking XP Pro OS would boot just fine.. I get the infamous XP Blue Stop screen every time, safe mode or not. I think the ide drivers for the new MBD may not be properly to recognize the new hardware? (I havent installed the VIA 4in1 deal, I dont know if XP still thinks I am using my Intel 815 chipset) though when I attempt safe mode it checks several system files located on the HD... I noticed that the blue stop screen appears before the colorful "WindowsXP loading" screen. Does windows have some hold to prevent hardware change? Siri mentioned the registration hardware change limit... to what extent would windows prevent boot, and what do I do!?!? I really appreciate any help, you have done so before thru computing.net and I thank you! Sincerely, Robert C

Reply: (edit)i believe the hardware changes allowed are supposed to be minor...a mb/cpu change is definitely major, and the OS will think it's on a brand new computer, and thus pirated

Reply: (edit)Thats not what happens when you exceed the HW change limit. It will tell you to call MS. Wot u got is IDE driver problem or BIOS problem. Put up stop codes and we help otherwise put old MoBo back - will boot OK.

Reply: (edit)by changing your m/b you have completely changed the hardware abstraction layer that xp used during install. you'll need to reinstall xp to have xp properly detect your current configuration.

Reply: (edit)repair ..2 Start the operating system from the CD-ROM, run Setup, and then choose to repair the previous installation. (skip the "Recovery Console" and "ASR" prompt This feature detects the old install when you start setup of the same version, and offers the "Repair" ("Press '1' for...." on the second screen, after pressing ENTER for setup ) You have to re-activate Windows when the repair process is finished. You can also back up and save the Wpa.dbl file after successful activation and then manually restore it after the repair process is finished and after you log on to the computer.
