new mobo os hanging on xp splash screen

Specs: Windows XP, intel core 2 duo, 1gb ram
I got my motherboard replaced on Compaq Nc6320 by 3rd party. When I boot up I cant get past the xp splash screen, the progress bar keeps moving but very slowly and doesnt get any further. I can boot into safemode with no problems, I've updated the BIOs and restored bios defaults, but not getting any further, any advice?

If safemode works but normal mode doesn't that is a sign there are device drivers loading that conflict with the hardware now present. Is the replacement motherboard identical to the original? Including board model & revision number ?
