Not really, Yep and Yep... Not really many "must have program" out there unless you need them. Only you know what programs you are going to need. Maybe a copy of WinRAR and perhaps a different browser other than Internet Explorer...

I paid for McAfee for over 5 years and about six months ago switched to Avast 4 free home edition. I like it better than McAfee.
You do need a firewall outside of Windows' version. I use Tiny Personal firewall but I hear Sygate is as good or better. Sygate is easier to find. Both are free.
I do recommend all MS' Windows updates including SP2 and I like IE6 SP1.
So, programs you need...Anti virus and firewall software along with updated Windows.
