I've seen several people in this group with a similar problem, but I haven't seen a solution yet. Whenever I plug my Lexar USB Jump drive in, the Found New Hardware Wizard tries to install it. This happens every single time. It didn't do this when I was running Me and it doesn't do it at work under XP Pro. Is there a way to stop this? I have the same problem when I plug in my Sony camcorder. Thanks, Steve

Start-run-type SFC /SCANNOW. note space between C and /. You will need the xp cd.

Also, make sure if the BIOS has the option for PnP OS it is enabled.

Try this, from Device Manager >> View >> click Show hidden devices and remove any device listed that is not installed correctly and reboot.

Well I ran scannow, but I guess I didn't have any corrupted files because it never prompted me for the XP disk. Then I rebooted and checked my BIOS setup, but I didn't see a PnP option. I'll check for hidden devices when I get home (I'm at work right now). Anything else come to mind? Thanks again, Steve

Plug and Play is a Windows service. Go to Start / run / type in "services.msc" (without the quote) and hit ENTER. Look down the list of Services for Plug and Play. Click on the Startup Type. If it is disabled, enable it. Save and exit.

Checked hidden devices, everything is installed correctly. Checked Plug and Play on the Services list, it's set to "automatic". Still getting the New Hardware Wizard. Anybody got anything else? I'm willing to give anything a try. I know it's not a big deal, but it IS an annoyance. Thanks, Steve

Have you checked the bios to see if the USB is enabled? Check the mobo manual.

No MB manual, it's a Gateway, so all I have is a generic owner's manual. The USB drive works, XP just tries to reinstall it every time. First, it recongizes it, I see the tray icon with a bubble that says "Found New Hardware - Lexar Jumpdrive USB Device". Then the new hardware wizard pops up and asks "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?" If I check "yes, this time only" it tries to find a driver, doesn't, and gives me the message "the software you are installing for this hardware has not passed Windows Logo testing...". Then I can either click "continue anyway" or "stop installation", I still get the same "a problem occurred during installation" message. But then the drive works fine. Now, if I click "cancel" when the hardware wizard first pops up, I still get the "a problem occurred during installation" message, but again, the drive works fine. So like I said, it's more of an annoyance than a big problem. What I don't understand is why does it work fine on my PC at work using XP Pro, but not at home using XP Home? Sorry this is so long, but I just wanted to clear (or at least attempt to be clear) about what was going on.

You can try going to device manager and uninstall all the usb drivers and reboot and let xp reinstall them. I don't know where to go after that. It appears to be a registry problem.
