hey all
wierd problem. bought new samsung dvd-rom drive (SD 616), tried to install it along side my older LG CD-RW. Originally set the DVD as slave to the CD-RW, but windows XP would not recognise a second drive at all, but CD-RW still worked fine. Swapped jumpers on the drives, so now the DVD is master and CD-RW is slave. Now windows recognises the DVD drive, which works fine, but does'nt see the CD-RW drive. However, the BIOS seems to recognise both drives in their correct master/slave spots.
Samsung site useless, just told me that it must be something wrong with XP. Any ideas?

Not sure if this will help but I had that identical problem. In the end I decided that neither of the CD roms liked being a slave so I re-arranged my hard drives so that I had one hard drive and one CD rom on the Primary IDE and one Hard drive & CD Rom on the Secondary & it works perfectly BUT & this is the BUT, BOTH CD roms are set to Master so it looks as if there is an internal pecking order, hard drives first and anything else second. Technically these CD roms SHOULD be slaves but they don't work in that configuration, maybe someone on the Forum has an explanation but it works for me!
Regards.Bob Mitchell.

Good post. I had a similar problem.
Try this configuration(if you haven't):
Primary drive/DVD - cable 1
Secondary drive/CD-RW - cable 2(if you have a second hard drive if not install only the CD-RW on this drive)
Set both DVD/CD drives to slave; if that doesn't work, change to cable select.
If you have only one hard drive, set the CD-RW to master since it's on it's own controller/cable.
BTW.... If both drives are detected in BIOS but not XP, there may be a problem with XP detecting the drive. XP has many bugs..that could be one. Hope this helps.Raymond Mackie
