New DVD drive won't stay Region 1

I just got a new Sony CRX320A and the Properties screen shows region as Region 1, but when I put a DVD in the drive it switches to "Not Selected" and it won't let me change it. Of course it won't play any DVD's since I always get Region error messages. It switches right back to Region 1 when I take the DVD out. This happens with all DVD's I've tried. Any ideas?

Nick, SWAG, I'm not familiar with your DVD machine, so take this FWIW. My guess is that you have the ability to select the region for each DVD and it is simply displaying the last selection. See if you are presented the option to choose what you like best and go from there. Seems to me there should be some reference to 'Region' in the book? HTH. Ed in Texas.

No, there's nothing about it in any instruction manual that came with it, and the region select screen does come up when I try to use Nero Showtime to play the DVD, but when I select region 1, it still follows up with an error saying my player is not the right Region to view the DVD.
