Help, just bought two new DELL4600 computers, one is whisper quiet, the other hmmmms, or buzzes non stop, sounds like buzzing you would hear from an old florescent light or street light, real annoying! I called Dell; they said that sometimes the power supply will be noisy, nothing you can do about that, some buzz, some don't. Getting an exchange on a power supply may or may not fix it. I said I would hold off, and see how bad it gets (what I really mean is how long it will be before I go crazy!!!) Does this Dell guy know what he is talking about? Are some NEW computers just noisy? Please help, everywhere I go, I hear it, even while I sleep, its LOUD!

sutimes they ARE just noisey, BUT..... open up up and make sure the hard drive and CD and even floppy drives are screwed in tight as they can cause a lot of noise too, if left loose

faster, better, MORE!!

Normally, power supplies do NOT hum or buzz. Get the replacement. If the transformer in your power supply is going bad, you're gonna wanna replace it before it goes completely.

If I've ever learned anything on computers it is that if there is a problem to begin with it will not just go away. Like the first reply said check and make sure all the screws are tight on it, if that doesn't directly fix it, take it back and get a exchange or new one. If you have two of the same model computers one should not be that much louder than the other unless there is something wrong with it. When you buy a new car if it had a strange noise coming from it you would make the manufacturer fix it right away wouldn't you? A computer manufacturer should be held up to no less standards than a auto manufacturer.

Before I received my 4600, I saw some posts on the Dell forum about a fan that was noisy. Seems like Dell got a shipment of bad fans. Are yuo sure it's your PS? Anyway, I lucked out, mine is quiet.

Its me again, well, after an half hour on the phone with the DELL tech, I unplugged the hardrive power and it was whisper quiet! The stupid hard drive was hmmming, so after another half hour running tests, with no errors being reported, he said he CAN'T REPLACE it without an error and to run a 3-4 hour test on it. He would call back later. Man, this suck, I have a loud hardrive that runs fine but drives me crazy with all the noise it makes, funny thing too, since I got two I of these computers, one it quiet, it just proves that it shouldn't be loud at all, I mean who sells computers the buzz louder than 5000 watt light bulb!!! How can I fix hard drive noise, does it indicate a bigger problem?

well, maybe not. run all the usual stuff, defrag, checkdisk, and if it's still noisey afterward, you shud get back to Dell again and staret to demannd some s---. I'm a PC tech and i see this sumtimes, tho, some hard drives CAN be noisey and still work fine. but that doesnt mean you shud have to put up with it if it's irritating you, esp as this is a new system. is it noisey all the time, or more like when its spinning up, like when you access it? If its permenant nose then it might have a bad motor in which case you are putting your data at serious risk. People in call-centres and TOLD to try to deal with the problem as fast as possible and not let it come back to the "shop" so dont take no for an answer! keep us posted tho, yeah?

Doesn't Dell have a money back guarantee if you are not happy with it? From the Dell website:
"Total Satisfaction Policy"

* You may return your new system up to 30 days from the date of invoice.1 Any refurbished systems can be returned up to 14 days from the date of invoice.
* It is important that you return everything on your order, and that it is in its original packaging.
* We will credit your account for the price of the system (minus initial shipping and handling).

If the tech dude won't give you a new hard drive tell him you will return everything, I bet he will change his mind. When you buy a new computer you should be completely satisfied. If you are not and don't bother to make yourself satisfied by making them live up to their end of the deal, you will regret it in the future. Trust me "been there done that"

OK, me again,

I emailed Dell, telling them of my situation and unhappy phone call with their tech and about two hours later, I got a phone call from Dell. It was some type of Manager and he was apologizing and said that shouldn't have happened, they would send out a new drive with everything pre-installed in two days. Even offered for someone to install it, but I said I could do it, thanked him, & also joking said he could take the hard drive I send back and install it in the tech's computer who helped me and see how he would handle it. LOL, strange how different people in the same company have different ideas on how far to go when dealing with a situation. Ones cares and tries to help, the other seems to be impersonal and offers no help.

About the noise, I think I read somewhere that the bearings in the hard drive can go bad, getting very noisy, but if they are noisy right from the start, than it’s a defective hard drive. I believe that’s what happened here; it was noisy from when I first turned it on, a constant noise, till I shut the computer off. :)
