I recently put together my new PC from Tigerdirect ordered parts but have run into a problem. When I turn the PC on, the HD light turns on for a second then turns off, all fans run, the gfx card fan runs, and seems to be working, but I can't seem to get the monitor to recognize the computer. I dont think I have to install software with no monitor right?
SPecs:

could be faulty mobo, gfx card, memory or just one of these components not seated properly.

In the manual,do you have a jumper setting to enable the video on your motherboard?
The quote below from you, shows your lack
of experience in computer assembly.QUOTE:but I can't seem to get the monitor to recognize the computer. I dont think I have to install software with no monitor right?"
The best thing you could is relax, and slowly
disassemble and reassemble step by step.Everything in your motherboard manual is
important.READ THE MANUAL....any step left out could be your problem.
None of this response is meant in any way to discourage your efforts.
Respond back with things as you reassemble
and you will have it running in the end.

First you are in a forum for WinXp, you may get an answer here but you would better posting in the General Hardware forum. Or try Motherboard org forum.
If everything turns on but no monitor, then check the graphics card, take it out and reseated it and plug in the cable again.
Is there any beep codes when it attempts to start??

As already advised, go thru it all again slowly - with the manual as a guide... Take your time...
Meanwhile with power off - and power cord disconnected from mains socket - ensure that all connectors internally are properly made; that all cards are securely installed, ribbon connectors likewise; any power-supply connectors too.
Even with nothing installed to the hard-drive (i.e. no operating system) when things are working correctly there will be a some minimal display of info on the monitor screen when the system boots up.
Once you have an OS etc. installed logically there will be more as it boots to the OS.
There is no software to be installed for the monitor; and the system will (shoud...) work in a basic vga mode during your initial tests.
When I did my first upgrade of my first PC it was learning curve...; and that's how one learns - by doing it... So hang in there and you'll make it.

Two common mistakes:
1. Not changing the bios disable jumper on the motherboard. Check the manual.
2. Installing motherboard standoffs where there isn't a matching hole in the motherboard.Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
