Hello all, I am curious if anyone has a Compaq and does the Welcome screen of Win Xp stay up longer than other computers. I was at an office today helping out my mother and noticed that her compaq is extremely slow. She has over 500mb of ram with a 2.1 ghz processor. Right now I am on a laptop with 1.9 ghz and 256 ram and the windows xp welcome screen barely stays up for a few seconds, while on the Compaq it stays up for around a minute or more. I have another computer at home with 1.5 ghz and it is also much faster loading windows with less ram. I took all the extra programs off startup and went to msconfig and made sure no programs she didn't need start, but it's still very slow.

Once it's fully loaded it works ok, but I am just wondering why it stays in the welcome/start win xp mode for so long.

Regards,
Slow Mo

How many programs are being loaded at startup? Many people have the entire Microsoft Office, Quicken, etc., loading at startup.

have a brand new compaq Presario running XP AMD Athlon 2400 + 2.00 GHz PC and my windows 98SE machine loads faster then this and that is only a PII There is so much crap loaded on this thing & its hard to tell what is needed & what is not in Msconfig My C drive is 33GB and is using 4.13 and my D drive had the dam recovery crap on it and that drive is 4.2 & there is 711Mb free on there, I thought this thing came with a 40GB drive.. How can I delete the recovery crap & does anyone know how many cd's it takes to make a recovery package. My CDR disapeared on me the other day for no reason then just came back tonight. I only have 112MB of ram installed since that's what it came with I do plan & I know it needs more but why is this s--- box so dam slow.

Hmmmm ... must be a Compaq thing ... I also have a new Compaq laptop (Presario 2135US) with a Celeron 1.8GHz cpu and 256 ram, which runs NO FASTER than the HP Omnibook 6000 that I had, which was a P 3/600Mhz, 192 ram system.

I thought it was because the cpu was a Celeron, but now I'm thinking I should avoid Compaq ... hrmph!

For Slow Mo's problem, what you might try, if you can, is to get another hard drive and put a fresh and lean install of the os on it and see if that improves the speed.

BTW, I haven't really noticed if the welcome screen on my Compaq with XP home stays on unduly long.

I have a compaq Presario 5440. I had Win 98 and 2000 running and had no problems with speed. As soon as I put Win XP Proffessional it became extremely slow. It boots up longer and everything I do is very slow. When I look at the task manager my Idle Processes are 0 but there is not anything else shown in the tasks that is using the CPU. I have loaded all the Windows XP patches and have no idea what to do. Does anyone know? I am thinking about going back to Windows 98. Any advice?
