go to start>run> type msconfig to decide what runs at startup.

If you don't know what a process is associated with, try using Process explorer downloadable at

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

You won't have to install it just run it and it will tell you what process is associated with what program.

Thanks,

Actually, SysInternals has a great little app just for this: it's called AutoRuns and it shows you every possible thing that gets started, and lets you easily disable unwanted stuff via a checkbox.

Just as several people said before, Run msconfig check the startup tab, and run a search for all the files to see if they are legit. As for getting more out of your computer, check out www.blackviper.com for windows xp configuration of services (including sp2).
