OK. I had Blaster on my Win XP system on Monday. I immediately took all the steps advised by symantec to fix the problem. I now learned that I forgot the last step (to remove the worm from the registry.)

I use the system everyday, and re-booted each AM, and everything was fine. However, On Sunday the 17th the system took 10 times as long to boot (about 6 minutes) and my dial-up connection has vanished from "network connections'.

I tried to create a new connection, but the modem selection option in the connection wizard is greyed out. So I tried to add it using "Add" in IE connection setup. It gives me 'ERROR 711: Cannot load Remote Service Access Service Connection Manager.'

OK..so what have I dine so far (over the last 14 hours):

1) Checked modem...OK
2) Installed a diff Modem...no change
3) Re-intalled orig modem..no change
4) Discoverd MSBLAST.exe in start up registry, so used symantac removal tool. Removal tool said worm was not detected, but cleared the "windows auto update= msblast.exe" anyway from the registry.

5) Found MS knowledge base article 329441 that identified this problem perfectly as a Service Pack 1 issue and Remote Access Connection Manager (RASMAN) not starting.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329441

6) Tried to start RASMAN manually in "My Comp>Admin>Services". rec'd Error 5: Access Denied (this agreed with #5 above)

7) Followed MS workaround for fixing this which involved making a change to the Registry to remove a couple subkeys as described in #5 reference.

NO CHANGE in anything. Still boots extremely slow and can not create a new connection to save my life. Otherwise, once booted, it functions perfectly fine.

What's going on??? Sorry for the long post.

The underlying problem is access being denied to RASMAN. Is it possible that the removal tool is designed to work for a system that infected, and not one that was only partially infected (as I had removed the file from windows\system32 eariler in the week) and in some way it now failed to completely fix my problem?

i tryed the symantec blaster worm removal tool all it says is that it removed the worm from the comp but it asks you to update from the windows update website but if you dont update the worm will auto-redownload to your system, got to this site and get the worm virus blaster security patch full install no need to connect to the intenet

This will work:

Run: regedit
Select folders in the following order:
-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
-SYSTEM
-Current Control Set
-Services
-RasMan
-PPP
-EAP
-when you get to this point, you should see 4 folders (numbered 4, 13, 25, 26)
-DELETE: folders 25 and 26
-Restart your computer.

This will restore your (old) connections

I had similar problems as the original post but did not have the blaster worm. The workaround microsoft gave did the trick, so I am assuming that it was due to the partially infected blaster fix.
