I use Adaware SE, Spybot S&D and CWShredder and it seems like everytime I do a scan with Adaware it finds critical problems, like I can clean out the spyware, check my yahoo mail and go to computing.net for one hour, those being the only 2 sites I've used, do another scan and there are more critical problems? Anyone know why this is happening? The other 2 come up clean.
Thanks

All of those are crap.. Plain and simple.
I have 2 programs for you to use..
1st
Firefox or any other Mozilla browser.. Scrap IENext,
Download ScanSpyware You'll find it finds tons more. But you have to purchase it to remove the stuff.. So far this is the best Spyware removal tool I have used.. Worth every penny.
I do Run both of these programs and I scan every two week.. I find about 10 things to remove. mostly cookies. But the 1st scan is quite large.

Well, you can call them crap if you wish, but probably 80% of the people here use them with satisfactory results.

buzz buzz buzz....why would I want to get an Austin Mini when I drive a Cadillac? Makes no sense to me. Alternate browser was not the answer to my question.

Also it appears that Mozilla FireFox is being targeted as well. A phishing patch has just been released for FireFox.
Read it here...

cant fault Spybot, Adaware, or Spywareblaster. all 3 work 2gthr.
Sally!!!
Have a look at ur installed programs. ie Kazaa - is full of spyware, as r most of the 'free' programs u get off mags and the net. which is y the scans will keep showing spyware.
what programs do u have??I Will Not Fail !!!

del like I mentioned earlier, I only check my yahoo mail and go to comuting.net for 1 hour and there's more criticals. I don't use kazaa.

Sally, If you're continually getting the DSO Exploit registry entries after running Spybot S&D it's a bug in Spybot S&D. You can go to the link below and download the Spybot - Search and Destroy DSO Exploit Fix 1.3.1 TX fix.

To BuzzStPoint, this is a HELP FORUM, not an opinionated forum! As Per rightly pointed out 80% of the forum users use these "crap" programs.
To SallyG, I use the above formentioned programs, have done for 4yrs, PC has NEVER Crashed, Rebooted nor have I had ANY problems with Spyware. My advise, keep your system up-to-date(M$ patches), and clean your internet activites nightly, run all the Anti-this-and-that programs weekly. Best of luck.
Hope this helpsThe world is full of willing people, some are willing to work, others are willing to let them; just a thought!

WOW.. Voice an opinion and get shot!! Talk about a strict country here..
Lemme say this and hopefully you guys calm down.
Adaware, spybot are good antispyware for FREEware. However they miss a bunch of stuff.. Example: I used to use Adaware, I scanned and it cleaned. Rescaned and found nothing. I scaned with scanspyware and it found 80 more pieces of junk..
Now to the broweser.. OH MY!! There FINALLY a security hole!! JUNK JUNK JUNK!! Hmm IE has tons of security holes, and every time the put out a patch it opens 3 more...
If you want to completly stop spyware by not installing a piece of software then you need to disconnect fomr the internet.
The Alternate browser will stop 90% of all spyware. Unless you install it your self. (IE: Kazza or downloaded progs) Internet explorer is designed and so unsecure that by simply going to a web site you can get spyware installed...
I can recommend many programs like Norton Internet security or Mcaffee Watch dog that will stop spyware from installing but you will then experience that your computer is slow and files and internet browsing slows as well.
As for as 80% of the people using Adaware and spybot.. Yeah I believe that.. But also look at the retun users using them program complaining that it can't remove the spyware. or it comes back.. Why? Because Theose free programs only remove the core of the spyware. not the complete program and all files.Go ahead now. I'll stand next to the wall so more can take some shots at me.. Remeber, Opinoins are free......

And demonking...
I know this is a HELP forum, I have been here a long time. I have helped out many people.. Just because I say Chevy, and you say Ford doesn't warrent people to get all upset.
If Justin and the other Mods want me to leave and not help other out. All they have to do is drop me a note and I will discontinue my helping hand around.

And more on the FireFox security holes...

This is turning out to be an Internet Explorer V Firefox debate.
Incidentlly, I read a long while back that some Shareware Spyware programs actually add enteries to the list of "dodgy stuff" in the trial version, to make you think that the Freeware ones are not picking these up, therefore, making you buy the so-called better products. Anyone ever heard of this? The world is full of willing people, some are willing to work, others are willing to let them; just a thought!

Tufenuff, thanks for the info, I already had that patch for Spybot.
Buzz, it was your presentation as per stated...sorry.
Demonking, thanks for your help and I also get all criticals as well as those spyware progs, I was just amazed that it kept coming back every hour.I'll do another check right now, and bear in mind, that I have ONLY used Yahoo mail and computing.net
I'll post my results as I also tried Spyware blaster as suggested.
Thanks

If my presentation seemed harsh or off, Then I apologize. Take it for what you will Freeeare is just that. Free. Makes no claim to remove and stop everything
Sally.. Possibly that the spyware is comming back because the two spyware dectectors aren't catching it.. Or perhaps you have a Browser highjack. Try running HighJackThis.
Just as Adaware was accused of awhile back of letting certain spyware through and not detecting it or removing it because of affiliates. They are good freeware but thats all can expect out of it.as for the security holes posted by wombat.. fixed.
also
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,119616,00.asp4 for Internet explorer..
Bottom line. They found 17 flaws since the release of the beta for Firefox 1.0 Now all are fixed. with verson 1.0.1
how many have IE had since the release of Version 6? We can go back and forth on this issue. But thats not going to help the orginal question of the thread.

Mozilla Firefox does beat Internet Explorer on many accounts, hands down. One of them being security.
If you want to stop nearly all of the malware (collective term meaning adware, spyware, dialers, hijackers etc), follow these tips:
1. Try using Windows 2000 instead. It's like Windows XP minus the themes. And much faster. Obviously if you want the pretty themes, stick with XP.
2. Disable all unneeded services. Visit this site for more information. Read with care.
3. Remove the stuff you don't need. XPlite and nLite are the best tools for this. Both work with XP and 2000.
Apart from saving space, you can remove the programs and services you really don't need and therefore decrease the chance of security risks. Think about every component and whether you really want to keep it, i.e. will you ever use it again? Be careful.
4. Run on a limited account for day-to-day use. This is perhaps one of the best tips I have found. If you are the only user of your PC (which is quite likely), then have two accounts on your machine:
- Administrator
- YournameThe admin account is, of course, designed for administering your machine NOT everyday use. However, by default you are given admin rights to every new user.
The Windows XP style user accounts applet doesn't match the old Windows 2000 one. You can access it by typing this into the Run box...
control userpasswords2
...and clicking OK. From this dialog, you can change the group your account is in. Either change it to a Power User (more secure) or Standard User (the most secure option). Make sure you know the admin password before doing this!
Then log out and back in. You should now be on a lower-rights account. Any time you need admin rights, just right-click on the program and select "Run As..." and then type in the admin user/pass combination. (NB: You have to have the "Secondary Logon" service enabled and running.)
5. Don't use common software. Obviously this one is unavoidable in a lot of cases but the default apps included with Windows XP pale in comparison to other. Firefox has already been mentioned, and is probably the best browser for the Win32 platform. Anything based on IE simply doesn't have security or the needed rendering for CSS. IE7 looks like it might appear soon but don't count on it being much better.
Outlook Express is another one. This app really has a crap feature-set. Mozilla Thunderbird (yes, the partner mail app for Firefox) really is amazing in comparison. It can be difficult to switch mail clients. Thunderbird makes it simple: it can import all of your existing OE details (and other clients too).
The list goes on...
Basically, what I'm trying to say is: think secure. Password all of your accounts. Make sure they're strong passwords too (at least 6 characters, both alphanumerical and symbols).Sorry for being too "personal" and opinionated. True, Computing.Net is intended for helping others but it can also be useful to share opinions — this helps others broaden their knowledge and rethink current opinions.

HEY BUZZ.... Got a hot flash for you.
Scan Spyware is listed as adware; it gives false positives to goad you into purchase and updates. That means that many of the hits you think it is deleting are false. Read about it at the single most respected anti-spyware website on the net HERE. Don't feel bad, these Rogue sites are skilled at selling snake oil and make you think you are getting French Perfume.
My suggestion is to remove that thing off your computer; it is doing you more harm than good.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day;
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime;
Then industry pollutes the water and kills all the fish.

Exactly what I was saying in Response 14, well done ranchhand for posting the link

this is for buzzpoint,i for one am glad your here and want to thank you for letting me know about hijackthis.i had a hijacked browser that was driving me nuts,i ran hijackthis, bye bye ,thanks again.you need to stay put, lol.

I just thought that I would add some information..I have purchased Spy Bouncer at home and at work we purchased Spy Ferret..Spy Ferret did noting to rid our computer of a problem..Absolutely nothing..Now Spy Bouncer was my home purchase..I can scan and supposedly find files that Ad Aware doesn't find, but the problem is that after getting rid of the files then amazingly come back again even when I am not connected to the interneet..You figure..Yep..I can scan and delete the files and then reboot (without connecting to the Internet) and get them again..I dont know if they are giving the appearance of finding something or what but I just uninstalled it for good.. OH,They even disable some protection in spywareblaster..Yes, I have to go to my Spywareblaster screen and reenable some items after scanning with Syp Bouncer...I guess I just lost a few bucks..Hope someone will benefit from this..

Forgot to mention..I just went back to the good ole stand bye stuff..Ad Aware, SypBot, Spywareblaster, and for the Hi Jack stuff its CW Shredder and HiJack This (with some help)..See ya..

Hi BSides... Spy Bounce and Spy Ferret are also listed by Suzi at SpywareWarrior (link in my above post)along with Scan Spyware as Rogue products that dupe people.
