Make sure the firewall is disabled if you have one.
Tell us how they are connected, which one is the host.

Simple clue:

Run the Network setup wizard on the XP machine and take the network setup Floppy that you WILL create during the setup wizard's process.

This will reset, IP addresses etc.

Next you should check for 'SHARING' on FOLDERS / FILES in each PC just so as to be sure you let one see the relevant stuff on the other.

Firewall won't stop one seeing the other so if you have it configured don't bother to turn it off.

If you are sharing an internet connection from the XP machine with others, then don't forget to set MTU.
