I just got done performing a clean install of XP Pro on my laptop. Previously, I upgraded to XP from 2K Pro and it networked fine. Now I cannot browse the network. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Could be most anything. Could you tell us a little about the network setup: router? wireless? number of computers? Cable? DSL? etc., etc.

One thing to try right away: on the host computer go to command prompt, type ipconfig /all (space before slash), enter, then type ipconfig /release, enter, then ipconfig /renew, enter. Tell me what IP address you get and what message you get after renew.

Check through this list for anything that might need to be changed.
1. Both on same workgroup
2. Both have different computer names
3. WinXP--Guest account turned on
4. No firewall products in use / router usually has no effect.
5. Set up shared files /printers, etc--do not count on the the 'Shared Documents ' folder working / is the Network connection Properties have File and Printer Sharing installed and checked as in use ??
6. Command prompt --->ipconfig /all
what is IP address of each computer ?
7. Try to ping by IP address both ways OK
Then try to ping by \\(computername) OK
8. Then go to Start / Run and put \\IPaddress and then OK--->do the shares open? Yes
Then Start/Run and put \\(Computername)----->Do the shares open ??
You should be good to go

XPAdvisor - I often see posts which say the guest account must be on. I have never had mine on and have no trouble networking. Why?

I also have a firewall enabled -- McAfee, but not MS's built in one. No adverse effect on my networking.

He may be good to go after all this, but maybe not. If he has a socket issue -- which is why I told him to release and renew -- he'll never get anywhere.

Try installing Netbui and IPX, disable XP's firewall. See if it works.

You may also try the netsetwiz again.

Goodluck.
