Hello. I just purchased a new computer and wanted to share my DSL line between my old computer and this new one... I bought a hub and some network cable and hooked everything up. ADSL going into the uplink port and the my two computers each going into a free port on the hub. This worked flawlessly for my friend's cable modem connection however it doesn't seem to work at all for me... My ISP says it gives me 2 ip addresses so this should be legit... I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong, the internet works fine on both when they are connected directly to the adsl modem... One of them has zonealarm and when disabled the internet still won't work for both computers when connected to a hub. Why is this? Can anyone help me... do hubs not work with DSL sharing schemes?

If you're paying for the second IP, you absolutely should take the hub back. Get a gateway switcher/router instead (circa $100.) The reason for this is that it filters packets (offering one layer of protection, especially against port sniffs) and it allows you to hook up all the machines you want to a single assigned IP (the switcher/router assigns internal IPs on your LAN.) For example, I have a hub linked to a switcher/router (upstairs.) Between me and my roommates, we have 6 computers hooked up to a single cable modem (we're also lucky enough to be the only user on the node.)
Using the router/switcher should make networking easier and safer (assign IPs instead of using dhcp.)
I don't honestly know anything about the built in internet connection sharing in windows because I've never needed to use it.
Oh yea... if the IPs are static, then a second one would be useful for running a server.
That was my 2 cents.

Hi,
Ok, if you paying for the second static IP then you must cancel it. Go out and buy a Router from Linksys model BEFSR81 (8 ports) and that will do the job. Now, I am running under Cable and I have ONLY 1 IP address, but by using this router i could be able to run as many computer as i can connect. Now i have 3 station and 1 laptop that run under this Router, and all comptures could be able to see the internet and share file, and printer. When you using the LinkSys Roiuter they will so you how to config your own IP. You only 1 IP for this router and each and everytime you logon the router will issue you an IP address.Truoble shoot:
- Check your Cabling
- Check the light on the NIC and makesure it working or LIGHT UP.
- Have ALL computer under one WORKGROUP name.
- Name each computer with unique name.
- Set ALL computer under Auto IP Config- From each station, to makesure it ok with the internet. You must go to DOS mode and type in Ping www.yahoo.com and it's will give you and static of your pinging.
If the static turn out to be all good, then you ready to go.
Enjoy bro.
But for Now, since you have a HUB.Your HUBshould be set:
- Connect an RJ45 from a DLS modem to 1 of your PORT on your HUB.
- DO NOT connected to an UPLINK.
Reason, if you did that ONLY 1 computer could to able to go ONLINE.Therefore you need to connected to any open PORT, EXCEPT the UPLink.
And config them as Auto IP config in your NIC properties and Web browser properties.
Good Luck.

That's not the most practical solution. I use a Linksys switch (about $55 USD), cable plugged into uplink, 2 pcs in free ports. 2 IP addresses, working like a swiss clock. DSL should be the same; i am inclined to think your hub is faulty. I had a poor brand-new hub that would rarely work at all, when I spent an extra $20 for the Linksys switch (slightly more efficient networking technology) I get blazing downloads like there is no bandwidth sharing at all (which, incidentally, there isn't with a switch). That's my advice. Oh and one more thing, make sure the WinXP built-in firewall is off. That thing sucks big time.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi,
I do have my Firewall ON and the internet is still working just fine. Firewall is NOT a solution.
Peace

This is true, internet still should work in theory with it on, but file and print sharing most definately will not.

Hi,
No hot feeling Mike S, but i just want to let you know that you have yourself an MCSE in the hour and I am sure i know what i am doing. Guess what, by doing mine setup and you do it right. You should be able to see the internet, files sharing and your printer shared. Everyone on the network should be able to enter to the files sharing and the printer as any time. So, why don't you check with your network again bro.
Peace out.

First, learn english.
Anyways, you might be right and it might be possible, but I have the identical setup as this guy, and I am just stating what solved my problem in the hopes it might help someone else.
These forums are for question and answer. Leave your attitude somewhere else.
Mike S.
