Hello,

I have a question. I just bought a new 1.8 ghz HP computer. I bought a Network Hub with 5 ports and a 50 foot RJ-45 cable. Now, I want to network my old computer and my new one together. Im completely new to the whole networking concept, because ive always had just one computer. Basically, on my new computer I have Windows XP Home, and on my old one I have Windows PRO. I want to transfer some files from my old to my new, so I figured networking them is the best way. I used Windows XP's Home Networking set-up wizard, but I cant seem to get it working. Any Suggestions would be appreciated please.

Hi Ryan,

Checkpoints:

1. Make sure both of the operating systems uses the same File system...ie. FAT VS NTFS

2. Try installing Netbieu on both XP. Check out this site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q301041

3. Make sure both PC logs into the same workgroup.

4. Make sure both PC's have the same username and password.

5. Have a look at this article, although it uses the example of W2K to network with Win98, it's still useful

All the best!
Helen

thanks,

Um, is the whole filesystem really that important? My old computer uses NTFS and the new one uses FAT 32... But the thing is, I can't even see the other computer in the network places folder. I try to add a folder from the other computer but it keeps saying invalid folder when I know it's correct. I try to access the other computer typing "\\RYAN\SharedDocs" and it wont find it. (Ryan being the name of my other computer) I figure if its with the file system then it should at least reconize the other computer right? Both computers have the same workgroup and im not sure what you mean but login and password. Can you help me out anymore?

the file system doesnt matter! however the protocols need to be the same! i suggest tcp/ip and use a static address like; 192.168.15.45 for one comp and; 192.168.15.46 for the other!

Hi Ryan.... ran into trouble with my hub whentrying to network my XP and 98 machines. Here's what I found out:

Some hubs don't like having the pc network cables plugged into port 0 or 1 - apparently this is a hub that's supposed to be used for cascading (adding additional hubs).

If you are going through a hub, try using ports 3 and 4 instead.

Hope this helps!

Hubs suck in reality. They will be replaced by switches and routers in the years to come. Your biggest problem is the hub, if you had a router, we could use DHCP which would automatically assign the two computers with IP addresses and probably make them in the same subnet also. Like caruso said, give them IP addresses that are close together with the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0).
I love DHCP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey

Get rid if the hub and use a twisted pair cable - if you do not want to twist them yourself any little 'puter shop can twist your existign cable or your can buy a twisted one.

The easiest way to transfer your files however is to slave your old HD into the new machine and just copy any files you want.
Then put it back and sell your old machine.

Good luck
