I’ve been having quite a dilemma trying to get my two XP computers working. They both have the same hardware so it has to be something software related. I am using the NetBeui protocall on both and I've ran the Network Setup thing endlessly, but to no avail.

The two computers are connected to eachother and the internet through a network hub. The Local Area Connection has Client for Microsoft Networks, QoS Packet Scheduler, File and Printer Sharing for MS Netowkrs, NetBEUI Protocol, and Internet Protocol (which is not selected).
The workgroup name is MSHOME and when I go to explorer and look at my network places, it gives me an error telling me 'the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.'
I've also created user accounts on both computers, however, I'm wondering if there is more to that. I have no idea whats wrong. Can someone PLEASE help me out.

Under the LAN Properties window, on both PCs make sure TCP/IP is checked. Also, on the advanced tab make sure that the firewall protection is OFF.

Thx.

Hi,
If you are using a HUB to connect your computer together u don't need NetBEUI, NetBEUI only good when you run 1 computer with 2 NIC card and also using cross-Over cable which is called RJ45. Try to use TCP/IP Protocol and have them Automaticlly detect setting and that will do it. Remove NetBEUI off either system.

Good Luck,
Let me know how is going for you.

I installed XP the other night on my home networked PC. The installation "removed" NetBEUI as it said it wasn't compatable with XP.

Takes a while to connect to authenticate to my 2000 server but it does eventually..

Foud out quite a few "bits" don't work with XP mind..:o(

Hey guys same problem here, Ive got 2 XP Home ed.comps connecting to the web via linksys 4port Cable/dsl router but they wont see each other? What gives? XP firewall is off on both and I am using tcp/ip for both. I noticed that the wizard wont allow comp #2 to access the web thru comp #1 but seems to complete the setup when I choose connect to internet directly (Thru the router) on both. But they wont see each other? Please advise, thanx.

Here's the answer to your painful experience. I got a big headache trying to figure this out and asked one of my friends for help, but he didn't know the answer yet...I finally found it and thought I shared my email with everyone...enjoy it...

Networking two or more computers with XP(Painful Experience).

Okay dude, finally figured it out...first of all, I know everyone has been posting s--- about the netbui, well you don't need to install that, xp works just like win2k, the only difference is that it's pretty hidden, below, that's all. I ran the stupid wizard again, which I don't think you need to anyways. Remember, this is supposed to be a more friendly OS...I did see someone post that no need for the netbui too...anyways...just double click on my network places, click "view workgroup computers" and the "microsoft windows network" line will come up in the window below which is the "Other places" window. Just look carefully, you can't tell until you actually do the above...click on microsoft windows network and there's your workgroup and domain or other computers on the network and double click on the one you want, and if it's a server, it will prompt you to put in the account info...now I'm back to my stuff...ahhh...what a painful experience...this is what the xp should stand for...this should save you a big headache...
