Hi. Please can you help?

I recently purchased a 2nd computer for my daughter. I want both the computers to share the internet connection and the files/folder/printer etc.

All software has been succesfully installed but although the internet connection is shared and both computers are able to use it I cannot share the files, the folders and the printer, infact both computers cannot even view each other in 'My Network Places' but still share the internet connection.

They are both in the same workgroup 'MSHOME', they both have different computer names. Both are running the same operating system (XP PRO). I just dont know what I am doing wrong, can anyone please shed some light on this rather annoying problem.

Thank You!
speed

is the printer shared? file sharing enabled?

(right click on any object and 'sharing')

Be sure to have set the relevent folders to shared, and the folders should then be available in My Network Places under local network.

In your network settings you may need to enable file/printer sharing in each machine.

In Cintrol Panel doubleclick Network Connections. Right click Local Area Connection and select properties tab. Make sure file/printer sharing is ticked.
You then have to manually set sharing on files/printers that you want to share. In most cases printersharing works fine. You just have to "Instal" the printer on the client machine as a network printer.
Filesharing in XP is a bit more complex because of XP's inbuilt file security. Anything located in the "Shared Docs" folder in MY NETWORK PLACES is fully shared. Other shared folders do not always allow client machines to access/use the contents of those folders. I have read other posts on the subject and they indicate that you need to create an account on each machine that the other can log into and use. I'm not sure how to do that because on my small home network I don't want my kids logging into my host machine. Anything I want to share I put into the shared docs folder. Hope this helps.

Hello there. Very much appreciated for the quick responses.

I am still not able to share the files/folders and the printer. I have enabled all the relevant files to shareing including the printer settings. When I click 'My Network Places/View Workgroup Computers' the cursor changes to the egg timer then displays an error 'Mshome in not accessible you might not have permission to use this network resource etc etc' the final sentence is 'The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available'.

I am experienced in using computers, so please I would be very grateful if you can guide me through this problem.

Kindest Regards
speed

Have you enabled the guest account on both machines under user accounts menu in control panel. If not pls do.

Thank You for your replies.
I am new to this site and did not know where to post my message, since then I have also posted a message in the 'networking forum', thanks for pointing that out.

Visited www.wown.com looks a bit complicated but will search through the site.

Yes Vishal guest accounts are turned 'on' on both systems, but they still cannot see each other in 'my network places' although internet connection is being used just fine by both systems.

Any help is grately appreciated.

Kindest Regards
speed
