Networking 98/XP

Ok new problem.
I had a windows XP and a windows 98 computer networked together. Something happened and the network was broken ever since i have been trying to manualy and using the xp network disk to set the network back up with out success. At one i got the xp computer visavle on the 98 computer but it disapperaered within secounds this happened twice and as if to tease me. Its really starting to get me down

A thought just occured to me could it be that i have faulty networking cable as im sure the network cards are working propwely or they would come up as not working properly
