for the past few days, i have been trying to get my windows 98se computer and my windows xp home computer to communicate with each other. they're both connected through a hub that is also connected to a cable modem for internet access. they both have internet access, however they can't see each other. they both are on the same workgroup, similar ip addresses. i can ping their ip addresses, but i can't ping their computer names and when i'm in my network places in xp, i can't see the 98 computer and same for the 98 computer. i have disabled the firewall in xp and that didn't seem to do anything. i am stumped. any takers??

You may want to try running netbeui on the XP computer.

HAve you run the "set up home or small office network" wizard from network connections in control panel? That should do all the dirty work for you. Definitely disable the xp firewalls, and get a good one :P

Clasic problem this, seen all the time on computing.net.
As thuper says, install Netbeui on both PC's. You will find instructions for adding Netbeui onto XP by looking at the Valueadd\msft\net\netbeui folder on the CD. Also, and this works everytime for me: add IPX/SPX onto both PC's as well. However: make sure that you tick the box on the 9X PC to allow IPX/SPX to enable netbios over IPX/SPX (otherwise you are wasting your time) (this is done automatically on the XP machine. Bob
