when I open the network connections page the icons are not there.the adaptors are in device manager and function ok but I cannot make any changes. I have tried reinstalling the network adaptors, but that does no good.

Shouldn't you be using the 'network adaptors' page and not the 'network connections' page which I assume is the one where you can add network places?

Sorry if this is a simple misunderstanding.

Sorry bro, I was at work. Memory fades at my age you know.

Can I ask, have you set a network up yet or have you just installed the card.

AFAIK it will only show in network connections once a connection has been made.

Ahh, I'm with you now. Have a peek at this link for something familiar:

Another question though, do you have or have you had in the past any software which installed it's own network device, such as AOL. Or have you recovered from a virus attack at some point that could have affected system files.

Have you tried switching to 'Classic View', rebooting and then swapping back. This may get XP to rebuild the folder contents.

Another potential solution would be to run SFC (System File Checker). If you've not used this before, it checks for damaged or changed system files and replaces them with the originals from your XP CD. Teeny weeny little problem is that you often have to re-install your updates again.

Also, what changes are you trying to make, there is usually a different way to do it.
