Network Connection Message Error

Comment:
In the system tray my "Network Connections" icon has a red X through it and says: "Local Area Connection: A network cable is unplugged."
When I view the Network Connections screen, there is a red X and the same message through the icon there. The icon is for Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC. I'm not really sure what that is. When I right click icon, I have the option of "disable" and wonder if I should do this. There is no option that I see to clear this from my system tray.
I do have an Ethernet port on my CPU, but nothing is plugged in there, so I assume I do not need this?
I would like to know the best way to remove this "flagged" icon from the system tray.

If those are not active connections, go to START > CONNECT TO > right CLICK each Networking Icon not in USE and click DISABLE.
Also, at the right click START > click PROPERTIES > click TASKBAR tab > click CUSTOMIZE and then at each CURRENT ITEM set the BEHAVIOR for each icon, most likely ALWAYS HIDE.

You can remove the icon by opening up the connection and highlighting the tcp/ip setting, and then choosing properties. At the bottom left hand side, there is a box that should have an X in it, that you can remove to take the icon off your task bar.
