Comment:

I have a home network of 3 computers hooking together with a router. Any files that are placed in the shared files folder in the my computer section are able to be viewed and used by others on the network. Any files/folders that are not put in that folder cannot be accessed. Also if we search for each other on the network, we can locate each other but cannot double click their computer. In both cases, it tells everyone that they do not have permission and need to contact the system admin. Any help on this issue would be helpful.

I´m not sure if I understand you right, but Sharing folders is one thing that seems to work? You can see everything that you have shared for other computers to see? In workgroup, every accessright is controlled locally. You can actually share whatever you want, and dare. Folders, drives, printers, cd-burners... And they will be shown in a search from other machines on same workgroup, with rights.

Make sure FILE SHARING is enabled and the files/drives you wish to share are marked for SHARING.

What I meant is that after opening my computer, there is a shared documents folder. those are the files that everyone can see and access. But if you were to try to access files/folders that aren't placed in that folder, you would get that error.

Basically, if we wanna share files, we have to place them in that shared documents folder. If we set another folder to be shared (without placing it in that folder), it can't be accessed by someone else.

The above is the error that I am getting. I get this error even though I have set it to be shared. (I have a zips folder set up to be shared, if another person clicks it to open the folder, that error message appears.

Hmm... it´s really this simple in XP. You already have 3 machines logged in the workgroup. You share a folder with a name. Everyone logged in have access to it. Just don´t make the folder into YOUR "my documents" (documents and settings or program files) but on the root of "C" f.ex.
