I'm working on an IBM Thinkpad at work and the netowrk icons are missing from both the systray as well as the control panel (I can still get to Network Connections, there's just nothing inside). Nothing shows up in DevMan.
I have run a virus scan, spyware programs, I have ensured all the proper services are running. I have disabled all startup items to no avail. I have run regsvr32netshell.dll, netcfgx.dll, and netman.dll. I have deleted the winsock keys. I have also tried MS Article 825826.
If I boot the computer to safe mode everything is working properly. The IBM software finds connections and I'm able to get network connectivity, just nothing visible in the way of an icon.Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Thanks,
broomec

Hmm..
Did you check the startup items in hkey_local_machine>software>microsoft>windows>current_version>run and check the startup entries.
Is the Firewall enabled? Try and check Device Manager to see if everything is fine. Reinstall TCP/IP, if you have the original XP CD.
On a different note, PLEASE keep ur OS updated from the MS site. XP, without updates, can act real funny at times.
Post back!

Hi Anuj,
Thanks for the response
The firewall is enabled. The OS is updated on a regular basis(last update 11-Nov-2005). I have checked the Run startup items and everything looks good.
Checking Device Manager is a problem because in Normal Mode nothing shows up at all, in Safe Mode everything is normal.
I have removed and reinstalled the networking component, I'm unable to uninstall any of the TCP/IP from the the Connections properties because I can't see them to do so.
Thanks,
broomec

Did your problem of "missing Contents from Device Manager" follow any Windows Updates?
I remember reading about a similar problem following the installation of the Security Patch: KB 905749. If that is the case, open Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and Remove Security Patch: KB 905749.
If this solves your problem of the "Blank Device Manager", but the "missing Network Connections" icon is still persisting, try the following:
Click Start> Run and type CMD and press[ENTER] .
Run the following commands one-by-one and press [ENTER] after each command:
regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dllIf the above DLL Registration does not help, try the steps listed in the Microsoft article: Q825826 you are already familiar with.
Hope this helps.
Happy Thanksgiving Day:-)M
