NETWORK CONNECTION PROBLEM
"\\"name" is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact
the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access denied."I have one desktop and one laptop, both running Windows XP. The laptop is a wireless.
They used to be able to see each other and I was able to exchange files, but not anymore.
Both computers are partitioned into Drive C: containing all Applications, and Drive D: containing
the Data files.
Drive D: are set to; share this folder on the network and Allow network users to change my files.
Windows Firewall is disabled. The Internet connection is DSL
With the Network Setup Wizard screens, I proceed as follows;
(On the laptop only I mark, Ignore disconnected network hardware,) Next:
1. no let me choose another way to connect to the internet. Next:
2. This computer connect to the Internet through a residential gateway or through another
computer on my network. Next:
3. Computer description: For the Desktop, "Desktop" and for the Laptop, "Laptop".
Computer Name: for the Desktop, "MAIN" and for the Laptop, "MDG" Next:
4. The Workgroup is "Mshome" Next:
5. I turn on, File and Printer Sharing. The next screen lists.
6. Unknown Internet connection Sharing. Computer description and Computer name.I also tried to changing item 2 as follows;
2. Other. Next
2a. This computer connect to the Internet directly or through a network hub. Etc. Next;
6. The screen list then, Computer description, Computer name, and MSHOME.I do not know with is the correct procedure, but I assume it is the last one.
In ether case the problem is the same. I appreciate if someone let me know.There are no errors when I ping the computers.
IP of Desktop is 192.168.2.133 and Laptop is 192.168.2. 188.When I go to My Network Places, nothing is listed. Then if click "Folders", and then click on
View Workgroup computers", both computers are listed. Then if I double click on the current
drive, and then click Folders again to show the double screen in Explorer, it list Mshome with
both computers, the way it should be. But if I click on the other computer, the error message
shows, and I can not access the other computer on the network.
.
I tried to disable Norton Anti Virus and Zone Alarm on both computers. The results were the
same.
Please help me solve this problem, Any ideas on what to do??
Thank you

Pake,
Looks like your NICs, Networking Protocols , Cabling and Router/Switch or hub if any are all properly set up and hence both PCs are able to have their own unique IP addresses , able to Ping each other in their Common Workgroup named MSHOME.
Your problem seems to be inability view the PCs in the Same workgroup and share their assets from each other.
Are you getting the Error: NETWORK CONNECTION PROBLEM
"\\"name" is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact
the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access denied." when trying to Vew the two PCs through My Network Places> View workgroup Computers in MSHOME?
Are you able to access the Internet from both PCs?
With regard to inability to view and share assets (file/Printer) depite making them sharing I have had luck by:1. Create the Administartor Login Name and Password SAME in BOTH PCs.
2. Create a Folder in each and name it anything Short[Ex:SHARE].
3.Move all files and Folders you want to share into that one Folder.
4.Right click the "SHARE" folder> Sahring and Security...> [ ]Share this Folder on the Network. (check that box)
Since I have Good Firewall ,AVP, Antispyware and other defences, occasionally I also use NetBUI to make Files haring easier; NetBUI is a security risk so use caution.
Hope this helps.
Please post back your result good or bad:-)

I can connect to the Internet wit both computers.
The Desktop is connected to a SMC Router. The router is connected to High Speed modem. The Laptop is a Centrino with built in Wireless. I am the only user of both computers and I do not use a pasword to login. I use the Laptop when away from home, and have a program that will sincronize Drive D: on both computers. It places replaces the file with the lowest date with file with the latest date. In this case I think that a shared folder is not the way to go.

Did you try creating an Administrator account in each PC with Same Login Name and Password and try to access the already created Shared Folder from each PC?
You don't have to sign in each time to log on if you later on use TweakUI and change login to Automatic.
Good luck.
I will be interseted to know how you solved the problem.
M
