Hi all,
I've been trying to help a friend who has an issue with his machine being real slow.
If I look in the task manager I can see over 100 instances of net(1).exe that are sucking up all memory resources.
I've done a virus check (clean), and am now at a loss. I'm sure there should only be one instance of this spawned. Any ideas what may be casuing these problems???
This machine is driving me mad...
Cheers

That net(1).exe could very well be some Adware/Spyware Program. I'd go to the link below and download & install Spybot Search & Destroy. After you install it read the instructions then update it and run it. I have XP and when I look in Task Manager/Processes I do not have that file. Here's the link.

More investigation seems to point to mapiicon.exe being the route of my troubles.
If I remove this from the start up list then all is well.
The PC used to use ASDL (which I believe mapiicon.exe is part of) but is currently using a std modem.
So do I really need mapiicon.exe? Can I just remove it or is it a vital part of the O/S??

I had exactly the same problem - up to 1000 instances of net(1).exe and cmd.exe running on a brand new configured W2K system. As soon as I disconneced my PC from the net (cable modem and cable router) i could see all processes disappearing from the memory, reconnecting to the net leads to the same problem after a couple of seconds. Even a copy of net(1).exe from a running system didn't solve the problem, so I renamed the exe (in "\system32" AND "\Driver Cache" !) and windows ask to insert the original installation disk to reinstall required files... doing that results in the same problem. My last try was to ignore the win message to reinstall the files and that was the solution!!! I have NO net.exe and NO net1.exe anymore on my PC and everything works perfectly :-)
Who the hell needs net(1).exe???
