If you're not using applications that require the .net framework, you don't need to have it installed; nor the updates.

If you wish to install it, you can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

You'll need to make sure that the Windows installer is version 3.0 or 3.1 before installing the .net framework.

Jennifer -

Good morning Just an FYI in case you didn't know ... it's not just the applications it's also software we install that require having Net framework installed & in use (I found out the hard way myself).

You probably can't install those updates until .Net Framework 1.1 has been installed.

By default they are listed in the Optional updates on the Microsoft Update web site, not in the suggested Security and Critical updates they always show you. If they are listed in the suggested updates, you already have .Net Framework 1.1 installed; if they aren't, you don't, and you don't need to install them.

There are several .Net Framework versions - 1.0 appears to be built into XP with SP2 updates though you have to dig around to find that out; 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0 are required by some programs.
1.1 and 2.0 need several updates as well if they have been installed - not many require 3.0 yet. One 2.0 update has a bug that results in you getting a Logon screen while booting even if there is only one user - the other one removes that if there is only one user .
The different versions are independant of one another and different programs may require different versions, so installing a higher version number doesn't require you un-install lower numbered versions, or un-install lower numbered versions itself.

Often, if a program that needs a version of it is installed from a CD, it will automatically install a .Net Framework version if it is required. E.g. ATI video chipset drivers do that.

Some "video drivers" (e.g. for ATI video chipsets) require a .Net Framework version be installed - if they are installed from a CD, the required version is often installed too automatically, but if you install "video driver" downloads obtained from the web, you may have to install the .Net Framework version required yourself. e.g. for ATI video chipsets, a .Net Framework version of 1.1 or 2.0 is required for the Catalyst software that comes with the "video drivers". In that case you can look at the installation directions on the same page as where you get the "video drivers" to find which version is required, or look at the the release notes for the Catalyst version, which may state a newer version is required than the installation directions do.
(I'm labelling them "video drivers" because it's almost always the case they're not just the display drivers - there are almost always associated programs that come with the actual display drivers)

If you don't actually need a .Net Framework version , it is "bloatware" - they take up a lot of hard drive space - e.g. 2x mb.

Netframe is not an upgrade type of software. Some programs may require 1x, 2x, 3x. It depends on which version the application is based on. In some cases you may need all three. Below are the listings in my Add/Remove programs list

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1

Othehill,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but sooner or later you will find yourself downloading & installing ...

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.

BTW wikipedia has a nice "everything you want to know but are too undaunted to ask" article about .Net Framework here...

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies. I'm still not sure what .net framework is or if my pc uses it for anything. I looked in add/remove programmes, this is what's there:

.NET Framework (English) v1.03705
.NET Framework 1.0 Hotfix (KB886906)
.NET Framework 1.1
.NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903)
.NET Framework 2.0

Do you think I should uninstall them and start again?

Soz for ignorance :(

Thanks
Libby

Is your WinXP fully updated? If you are using IE6 is it fully updated? Are you downloading the distributable versions of these files?

Have you had to perform a system repair in the past?

.Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0 are not installed unless some program installed them as part of it's Setup or installation, or you saw them in the optional updates on the Microsoft Update web site and decided to install them. If you weren't aware of having installed them, then some program must have and they're required. If you're not sure whether you installed them yourself, it does no harm for them to be installed, but as I said they take up at least 2x mb od disk space each. Once either of them are installed, the updates fr both of them should be installed - 2.0 has at least two updates as well.

OtheHill is asking this:
"Is your WinXP fully updated? If you are using IE6 is it fully updated? Are you downloading the distributable versions of these files?
Have you had to perform a system repair in the past?"

for several reasons...

If you have had to repair your system, such as if you had a virus or spyware or a trojan and had to do something to fix that, those programs may be listed in Add/Remove but don't work properly.

At least some of these require Windows Installer 3.1 be installeed before you run them - .Net Framework 2.0 I believe, and at least some of the updates - in that case they will probably give you an error message shortly after the installation starts and quit the installation. If your Automatic Updates were enabled, or if you chose all available suggested and selected by default Security and Critical updates in Microsoft Update, Windows Installer 3.1 is installed automatically.
If Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed it will be listed in Add/Remove Programs.

If it isn't there, search the Microsoft web site for: KB893803 and that will yield you the proper version of the Windows Installer 3.1 that you can download and install.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...
Then you should be able to install the .Net Framework 1.0 and 1.1 updates .

If Windows Installer 3.1 IS there in Add/Remove Programs and the updates still won't install, .Net Framework 1.1 is probably corrupted.
In that case, try un-installing Net Framework 1.1 in Add/Remove Programs, then re-installing it.
If you get an error or errors and it can't be un-installed, it probably won't work to try installing Net Framework 1.1 either (been there, done that).
In that case, get the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from the Microsoft web site, install it, run it, and find the .Net Framework 1.1 listing and delete it - that gets rid of registry settings and at least some files installed by the original Net Framework 1.1 installation that interfere with installation. Then install .Net Framework 1.1 again. Then install the 1.1 updates. And the 2.0 updates.

Download the .NET Framework 1.1 from Microsoft Windows Update.
Choose Custom search.
Look Software, Optional
If it isn't there, download and install this:

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

NDP1.0sp3-KB928367
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

NDP1.1sp1-KB928366
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

If you need it.....

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...
