I have a question about the microsoft .NET framework. If i download and install .NET 3.5, then does it contain .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 frameworks already? Or are the other two independent, and have to be downloaded seperately?

Same question about Windows Installer. The latest release is installer 4.5 ... so is it necessary to have windows installer 3.1 seperately on the system?

Thanks

Anupam

1. Answer to question asked about .NET Framework:

NET version 3.5 does not contain earlier versions. You must download and install each component separately

2. Answer to question asked about Windows Installer:

You only need one version. The latest version supersedes the earlier version.

To add to the above you need to read which versions of Windows support the version you are installing.

Different .Net Framework versions are required for running different programs, but you don't need to install any version of it unless a program requires it. Installing them won't make anything work better unless a program or programs reuire one of them to be installed.
E.g. if you have video with an ATI chipset, the default Catalyst application that comes with the drivers currently requires .Net Framework 2.0 to work properly, but you can use Omega Radeon drivers instead (fully approved of by ATI but not supported by ATI, available on the web) that have a Control Panel instead of Catalyst, and not need to install a .Net Framework version at all for that.

If you are installing software from a CD, if the software requires a .Net Framework version, if it has not already been installed, it is often automatically installed from the CD, or if not you are told you need to get and install a certain .Net Framework version first.

Thanks so much for the answers. Now i get it. Yep, some programs that i installed on my PC required .NET framework. So i was wondering about the versions.

But gee... thats really a trouble, if someone requires different versions of the .NET framework to have on his PC. The download size is already big, and the installed size of the framework is even bigger. 3.5 program size is 197 MB, and the install size would be even bigger.

Anyways, thanks for the answers :)
