This senior wishes to express grateful thank for all the help in the past year and, as usual, apologise if any of my questions are dumb, or if my search of the threads couldn’t locate an answer.

We just bought a used computer. It is an IBM NetVista Intel Pentium III 800MHz, 256 SDRAM with Windows XP Home Edition SP2. Pre-installed on it was Ahead Nero Burning ROM Ultra Edition 6.0.0.

Part of our Christmas gifts was a Nero 6 Ultra Edition CD/DVD Suite, so we decided to install this newer and more complete suite to replace the pre-installed Burning ROM only. I don’t know if this is where we went wrong, as I decided to first uninstall the pre-installed Ahead Nero Burning ROM Ultra Edition 6.0.0.

The uninstall appeared to be successful. After I installed the newer Nero 6 Ultra Edition CD/DVD Suite it worked very well. However, a search showed numerous Nero temporary files in the system, apparently left over from the uninstall of the old Nero Burning ROM. We tried to delete these manually from the Search Results but kept getting an error message that file cannot be deleted, as can’t be read from source disk.

According to the Search Results all these files are located at C:\Documents and Settings\Mui & GG\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory. (Mui & GG is the name we gave the computer).
There are at least 400+folders and files, with a total size probably over 1 gig. I know this as the hard disk used space increased by 1 gigabyte after I did Nero uninstall and install.

The strangest thing, to me, is I searched for C:\Documents and Settings\Mui & GG\Local Settings\Temp but can’t even locate the Local Settings folder. By search I mean I clicked My Computer, then Local Disk C:, then Documents and Settings, then Mui & GG, but there was no Local Settings. This is so confusing.

Showing in the Search Results are 57 folders all named “Temporary Directory 1 for Nero 6 Burning ROM Ultra Edition”, “Temporary Directory 2 for Nero 6 Burning ROM Ultra Edition”, etc, right through to “Temporary Directory 57 for Nero 6 Burning ROM Ultra Edition”.

Then looks like another 57 folders named “Nero Burning ROM 6.0 Ultra Edition”, each of different size and content and with a different Temporary Directory number, for example “C:\Documents and Settings\Mui & GG\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1, 2, 3 …..to 57”.

Then another 57 folders named “Nero 6 Ultra Edition”, each of different size and content and with a different Temporary Directory number, for example “C:\Documents and Settings\Mui & GG\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1, 2, 3 …..to 57”.

That alone is 171 folders (57 x 3).

There are a multitude of other folders with the same name, for example, 15 folders named “nero”, all different sizes with different contents. Then there are individual .dll, _eng, .vxd and other files of various sizes.

My dilemma is what to do next, as I would dearly love to recover the 1 GB disk space. Should I try to uninstall the new Nero 6 Ultra Edition CD/DVD Suite, and then how do I know if all Nero-related files and folders would be removed, or would it create another explosion of Nero stuff?

If anyone can advise how to resolve this mystery it would relieve me of a lot of stress.

Take care everybody.

Pinsim

Thanks, and take care everybody

Hi Pinsim ... First off reason as to why you can view the local setting folder is because windows hides it , You can find it if you do the following >>> double click the "My Computer" >>> Tools >>> Folder Options >> highlight the >> View tab >> Scroll down to you see " show hidden files and folder " >>> add a dot on it , then click apply ... Now you will be able to view that folder and everything in it , Remember though after you are finish to redo what you just done above here ... Now if you want to start over with downloading Nero , This is what you should do >>> go to windows Add and remove Program area and uninstall Nero , once that is done go to start >>> search >> and do a search on Nero , remove everything it finds , then delete everything in the recycling bin , If you know how to remove entery from the regedit , then do so there as well , if not don't worry about it ... Now restart your computer and once its back up again download nero again

Hey RoadRunner-Also suggest download regseeker and run it after the uninstall to clean the registry. Also maybe CCLEANER. Both free on a google search.

Yep I agree with them too Per , though I still like to using jv 16 power tool the older version , The one that is free ... also I should mention Pinsim , If you right click the "Start " and click explorer >>> expand the area Program Files , its under the C drive , Look for Ahead folder , if its there delete that as well and then delete the recycling bin follow by a restart

You're welcome Pinsim ... Just remember though when you delete Nero from add and remove area to follow what I mention to do in the Explorer area next and then the rest of my instruction , And if you are going to be using any of what Per suggested regseeker or ccleaner to be really sure you know how to use either of them because I heard any regedit cleaner can cause more harm then good , only if you are not sure how its used

Hi

It's Pinsim reporting back on how my situation with Nero turned out, in case someone had the same problems.

Essentially I followed Road Runner's advice by uninstalling Nero, then searching for any leftover Nero/Ahead items, then deleting all the files and folders found I found.

Next I ran the freeware jv 16 power tool to identify and remove any Nero/Ahead invalid/obsolete items in the registry. After that I downloaded the applicable Nero Clean Tools from www.nero.com. but didn't need to use them this time. I re-installed Nero and everything is working 100% fine.

Many thanks Roadrunner. Also thanks Per for suggesting regseeker and CCLEANER. I couldn't find regseeker but I downloaded CCLEANER and it looks like a very useful and comprehensive utility. I need to read up on how to use it first, as at first glance it intimidated me. No doubt, as soon I am comfortable I will use it.

Thanks, and take care everybody
