Needing to reorganize C: drive

November 7, 2010 at 09:19:52
Specs: Windows XP SP2, Intel Centrino Toshiba MK8025GAS
When a local computer technician reinstalled windows XP for me on my 2005 model HP Pavilion, he didn't erase the old setup, but rather made a new windows directory deeper in. Now there are file references criss crossing my computer. I need to do a clean slate. Dos prompt within windows doesn't work because files are in use, and "dismounting" the files in use is disallowed. If anyone can tell me how to reach the c drive and not only delete / erase AND format, I would be obliged!

... sounds like you do'nt have a bootable xp cd(?)

... might be handy to write down your keys first!:

... this is also worth a mess with:

... to make a bootable CD from your installed XP system with the above (freeware) iso creator

Windows XP never had and never will have a DOS Prompt because it has no MS-DOS. What you see is NT Command Prompt.

Regards you issues, the Tech should of either undertaken a Repair Install or a Clean Install, I would advise to backup everything and start with a Clean Install !

HP pavilions might have a recovery partition.

Go to the HP support page & put in your model number.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.
